How to Save Money on Water

Cloudine
Water is a crucial element of our lives, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to spend as little on it. As a people, we've indulged in a few behaviors that simply do not help us reduce our cost of water. So buckle up, make sure either your printer's working or that you have something to take notes with, and pay attention.

Machines Go Crazy

Dishwashers are convenient, but not practical when it comes to water. First of all, they use a lot of water. Secondly, it's not unheard of for a few (or many) dishes to be cleaned badly. This means having to rewash them. Can you hear the money just trickling out of your wallet? Going back to cleaning them manually will help lower the amount of water spent - and thus save on the money spent.

There's a time to think and a time to focus

Lots of people like to sing in the shower; or think in the shower; or hum while washing the dishes. Sadly, this means you'll end up spending more time. If anything, you should be thinking "Don't waste time. Don't waste time" over and over. It's a bit stressful at first, but once you get used to the quicker pace you'll be able to do it without having to nag yourself. By focusing, you will get your water-related tasks done much more efficiently.

Have one homemade meal a day

This isn't to suggest you should go out to eat more. That definitely isn't the way to save money. However, try to go with simple breakfasts and lunches. Instead of using and soiling a pan to make pancakes, toast up a bagel. There's also no need to get plates and utensils dirty when you can make sandwiches for the family (and put them all on the same plate) .

Don't be afraid of bacteria

You need to be clean. However, that shouldn't mean you should be scared of getting germs on you. Bacteria are a part of life. So instead of using your clothes once and putting them directly in the bin, why not try this instead: wear an item twice in a week (it doesn't have to be right after), then fold it up and put it aside; when you feel like it again you re-wear it; then you can put it in the wash. Three uses and then it's laundry time.

Get a water filter and pitcher

Instead of buying water bottles, bottle your own water at home. Having a water filter will allow you to get clear water at home. Use your old water bottles, clean them, and fill them back up. Get some labels if you have multiple people in the house.

A pitcher is also a good idea. Put it in the fridge and people will drink tap water more and more than store-bought, and more expensive, water.

Rain, rain, don't go away

It's a good idea to put some clean buckets out when it rains. For those who have plants, you will save a lot of money by using rainwater instead of home water. If you live in an area with a lot of green life, you should put away your buckets when it's not raining as they'll get dirty and polluted very quickly.

Turn it Off

You don't need to have the water running while you're scrubbing a dish. Your teeth will not get any cleaner just because you leave the water running while you are brushing. You also don't need to have the water running while applying shampoo, conditioner, or other various showering rituals - no matter how nice it may feel to have warm water running down your back while you are doing these tasks. You only need water to get your hair and body wet, and then to rinse them off.

So now that you have learned a few water tips, go ahead and use them.
