How to Save Money While Going Green

Even in these tough economic times (anytime actually), you can save money while going "green". After scouring the internet and pursuing the local bookstore, here are ten ways to save money while saving the plant. It should be noted that these are long term savings and not a quick fix. There are also more listed on such sites as www.thedailygreen.com and www.answers.com:

1. You can save money (not to mention a few trees) by visiting your local library to find a new author, actor or musician before spending money at your local bookstore.

2. Save money and gas by making a shopping list and menu once a week to plan your meals. Plan to use fresh ingredients first, and then use frozen or canned items.

3. Changing the power management setting on your computer can save you $40 to $80 per year. Check with your computer's company (most can be found online) to find out how to change the setting.

4. Use rechargeable batteries in your portable items. They only use a small amount of power to charge (most can be charged within an hour) and can save you money because you do not have to continue to purchase batteries. Further, you can also keep dangerous chemicals out of the landfills.

5. Use compact florescent light bulbs (CLF), they use less power then the standard incandescent light bulb and give out the same amount of light as well as lasting longer than a standard light bulb. These lights can save up to $100 or more during the life of the light.

6. Our parents were right - turning off lights when the room is not in use can save 11% or more on your energy bill per month.

7. If you lower your water heater to 120 degrees, you will not be able to notice the difference and you can reduce your costs up to 10% per year.

8. Even though there are no items recharging (i.e. cell phone, mp3 player, laptop) their power cords are still using power. Unplug them when not in use and you can save up to 8% per year in electric costs.

9. If it is a nice day out, let mother nature help with the laundry. Line dry your sheets and towels. Not only will you save 6% per year, but the sun and wind is a natural disinfectant.

10. Purchase a low flow showerhead or faucet. They have the same power as standard products, but they will also save 50% to 70% off your water bill and save water at the same time.

We have used the low-flow shower heads for quite a while. Your other tips are good as well. Thanks
