The best way to save money on your art supplies is to buy what you need from Dick Blick. Dick Blick often has sales on art supply items for up to 70% off on a regular basis. I've even seen sales at Dick Blick for even more off, but that is rare. You can shop from their catalog, or online. Shopping online is easier, plus there are often sales that aren't in the paper catalog.
I like to buy whatever is on sale, and buy it in bulk to save even more money. Occasionally, I will buy something if there is a really good sale, even if it is something I don't normally use in the art I do. I like to experiment, ad I figure at some point I may want to try something new. And if I already have the supplies, I will be more likely to experiment with a new medium, without feeling guilty about wasting money on something I decide I don't like.
Another good way to save money on your art supplies is to request them as gifts. When someone asks you what you want for your birthday or Christmas, tell them to get you art supplies. They will be glad you gave them an idea for a gift, so they don't have to guess. Most people, especially adults, won't give you a straight answer when you ask them what they want, and it makes shopping for you a burden, trying to figure out what they want.
I've done this, and it has always worked out fine. Often I get something I actually need or want, and even if it isn't something I don't normally use, like scrap booking materials or a calligraphy set , it is almost always something I can put in my collection of family arts and crafts supplies. This is the stuff anyone in the family gets to use for card making, school projects, or just plain fun.
You can also save money on your art supplies by shopping at yard sales, thrift stores, and dollar stores. I can always find yarn, interesting collage and assemblage items, and fabrics for doll making. Recently I found a perfectly good Chinese brush painting art set. I haven't used it yet, but might decide to try it at some time in the future. I got it for a dollar, when brand new, it would be over $20.
These are just a few of the best ways to save money on your art supplies. There are plenty more. Just keep your eye out for great sales, and use an open mind when shopping in places you might not normally think about purchasing g art supplies.
