How to Make a Scent Pillow

Cheryl Dennett
Before the advent of inner spring mattresses, bedding was stuffed with herbs and grasses to keep it smelling nice. Now that we have modern mattresses, it is uncomfortable to have lumps of herbs to sleep on. So, the use of scent pillows came into practice. Here are directions to help you make scent pillows for your use or to give as gifts.

To make a scent pillow, you can make a fabric cover for any small pillow or pillow form. You can also buy a 12X16-inch pillowcase. You will then need to hand sew a pocket into the pillowcase. If you are having custom throw pillows made for your sofas and chairs, have a pocket sewn on in the same fabric. Be sure to keep all the leftover fabric to make sachets to go into the pockets.

To make a pocket to sew onto a pillow covering, you will need to cut out a 6-inch square of fabric. The edges should all be pressed with a half inch fold. Then, fold one of the sides another three-quarters of an inch. Stitch this and iron, also. This will be the top of your pocket.

Place the square in the center back of the pillow covering. You can use a machine to stitch this on. But, it may be easier to hand stitch the pocket into place. It should be sewn on the two sides and the bottom. Leave the side with the extra fold unattached and at the top.

Next, you should make a sachet to put into the pocket. You can make simple bags out of coordinating fabric. Or use any cotton fabric you may have handy. By leaving the top of the pocket open, it is very easy to change the scents you are using to make your home smell lovely and fresh. Instructions on how to make a sachet are available in my previously published article here.

Scent pillows are a wonderful addition to your decor in any room. They can be used in any pillow you have for decorative purposes. It is not advisable, however, to use them in pillows you use for sleeping. This is for the same reason that herbs and grasses are no longer stuffed into mattresses. It can get a bit lumpy. But in other pillows, they will help every room in your home smell wonderful. Hopefully, these directions will help you make all the scent pillows you desire to use in your home or to give as gifts to your friends and family.
