How to Scent Your Soaps

Essential Oil Recipes for Homemade Bath Products

Angela Fuller
Soapmaking has enjoyed several years of popularity among home crafters who are whipping up their own custom scented soaps in record numbers. If you are one of the many who are enjoying this particular hobby, here are a selection of essential oil recipes for you to use in your own creations.

I recommend using only essential oils (as opposed to fragrance oils) for batches of homemade soaps and other bath products, as their fragrance is stronger and uncut. Using a recipe for a blend of oils is an easy way to invoke a particular aromatherapy "mood" for soap or lotion making. The following recipes can be used for a variety of products you may wish to create including bath salts, bombs, and fizzies. However, please note the amounts listed are for a standard large batch of molded or loaf soap (8 lbs.) Adjust the ratio accordingly.

Spicy Love
2 oz patchouli essential oil
1 oz Peru balsam essential oil
1 oz clove essential oil

Refreshing & Calm
2 oz rosemary essential oil
2 oz lavender essential oil

Soul Joy
2 oz orange essential oil
.75 oz bergamot essential oil
.25 oz basil essential oil

Relax Me
2 oz lavender essential oil
1 oz chamomile essential oil
.5 oz cypress essential oil

Romance
2 oz sandalwood essential oil
.5 oz rosewood essential oil
1 oz ylang-ylang essential oil
.5 oz patchouli essential oil

You can also add a variety of herbs and flowers to give your bath products more texture. Additives include dried lavender buds, chamomile flowers, basil, and rosemary.

Relatively inexpensive oils can be found online at a variety of popular resources including:
eBay
Lavender Lane
Sunfeather Natural Soap Co.
