How "The Secret" Has Helped Me

Steven Jacob Borthick
Before reading "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne and remembering that I'm fully in control of my life, I had slipped in to the slums and was getting really junky cleaning jobs in the working division, as it had been for a long time before that. Of course, I don't mind cleaning, but when you feel that you've just become the Navy's janitor, you don't see much to look forward to.

The night I read "The Secret", I told myself before I went to bed, "I'm going to have a good day tomorrow, because I'm deciding to right now". I also texted to my Facebook account, "Steven Jacob Borthick is going to have a good day tomorrow, because I decided it so".

The very day after I began reading "The Secret", my petty officer leaned out the window during our break and told me to come inside AFTER THE BREAK. He's almost always demanding with people, and if he wants to talk to you, he talks to you NOW; yet he was fine with me waiting for the two minutes until our fifteen minute break was over. I noticed this right away, but I didn't yet realize The Secret had anything to do with it.

When I went in to his office, he told me that one of the new girls and I would be going down the hill to help a Military Leader Instructor to record iPod serial numbers. I was freaked out, but I didn't show it on my face; he never picks me to do anything! He hasn't really liked me before in the past, because I'm too highstrong and tend to be confrontational, but yet he was choosing me to get away from all the sink-scrubbing and gazebo-sweeping. This was when it first hit me that what I'd told myself the night before was actually coming true.

As I was walking out of the building, the mail petty officer asked me to grab -four- other people and give him a hand. I love helping people out with things, and once again felt privileged that somebody was asking me to do something. So I went back inside and standing there AT the Quarterdeck were EXACTLY four Seaman, the exact number of people he asked me to get. I talked to them and they all went outside to help, and two other Seaman overheard me from down the hall and also went out to help.

JUST as I pivoted to go back outside, the Officer Of the Deck asked me to run a message down the hall to the building maintenance lady. The right place at the right time! Yes I'll run an errand for you, OOD!

Finally, I left the building again and met back up with the new girl who was waiting for me, and we headed down the MLI's building and help with the iPods.

When people ask me to help them with something that I'm actually able to help them with, it's like they're giving me the sweetest kiss on the cheek that I've ever gotten. I love when people ask for me to help them, because I love doing things that people can appreciate. It gives me a sense of worth and belonging. When multiple people ask for my help, it's like Heaven on Earth. "What can I do for you? And you? And you?"

Once we got down to the building and started recording iPod serial numbers, it turned out that of the two Air Force guys we were working with, one was a friend of my friends! We had a great time talking about some of the goofy things he does and says. Then, as we happened to finish much earlier than the MLI anticipated, and as she was going to be at a meeting for the next half hour after we finished, we had plenty of time to relax and chat. Since when does this happen during the workday? When her meeting was over, she came down and talked with us a little bit and we took all the materials back to her office, then were on about our way, being finished with the day.

Now, over the last week since I had that fantastic day, things continue to "just be going right". Today, a week later, I was inspired to write about all the good things that have been going right, for a couple of reasons.

1) I told myself last night, before I went to sleep at around 2300 that, "I have my alarms set for 0710, but if the Secret definitely works, I'm going to wake up before my alarm. Let's see, I want to wake up five minutes before 0700, so I'll wake up at 0655". I was being extremely precise in what I wanted, because I thought this would be the ultimate test in seeing how well The Secret worked. This morning, I WOKE UP AT 0654! Not only did I wake up before my alarms went off, but it was a minute before I told myself I would wake up from the previous night! I gawked at my phone when I saw it said 0654, and as I was looking directly at it, I saw it turn 0655.

(I'm normally an EXTREMELY heavy sleeper, and have a tendency to oversleep, but I never wake up before my alarm goes off. Actually, I shouldn't be defining myself that way, because that's counterproductive to the proper usage of The Secret. So I'll bear arms against my old way of thinking, and tell myself, "I always wake up before my alarm feeling fully refreshed, I just can't help it! Thank you God for making me this way!")

2) As I was walking by the Quarterdeck today, to go change into my contacts (as I was wearing my glasses at the time), the petty officer on watch stopped me and asked me if I was doing anything. I told him I was going to go put my contacts in, and he told me he needed someone to be the runner (the runner is the person who transports all the official documents between the main building we were at and the administration building). Here we go-someone else was asking me to do something for them, and this time it allowed me to go change in to the nicer uniform that I prefer to wear. I told him I would be right back; since I was going to my room anyway, I would change and take over the runner position.

Other things that have "just been going right" this past week include: the division working out during the late morning during the working day, instead of the normal mid-afternoon time; all the chiefs seeming to be in great moods and I've been able to actually talk to them; finding out that I've made it back down below 200 lbs (I'm at 195 now); some other personal goals that I shouldn't really specify to the public (lol); and I was the person that my uncle called when he was feeling down in the dumps and needed someone to talk to, and I was able to help lift him back up that night (about 3-4 nights ago).

If this really is all that there is to The Secret, and it really is this easy, I'm going to use The Secret for the rest of my life. Also, I'm going to continue writing many more things related to The Secret, in order to help make The Secret become The Not-So-Secret, as others have done, to help everyone who reads my articles become inspired to use it as well and see all things happen to them for the better.
