Seine Nets are used for a variety of purposes but the two most popular uses are for commercial fishing and for the safe capture of marine life to study and then release back into the water. They are popular for commercial fishing because they allow the fishermen to catch larger quantities of fish at a time. They are popular for those who wish to study marine life and then return back into the water because it doesn't physically harm the marine life like a hook and line or trap will.

List of Materials Needed

How to make a Seine Net

1. The first thing you will need to do is obtain a minnow seine net. You can usually purchase this at your regular fishing supplier. As soon as you have your net you will need to find two wood sticks and two sticks of thick packing foam. Break or cut your wood to match the two shortest sides of your minnow seine net. One piece of wood for each side.

2. Once you have made your wood sticks the right length drill a hole in each end of both sticks so you have a total of four holes - keep in mind that these holes need to be big enough that your rope can fit through.

3. Next tie one piece of rope to each corner of your seine net. Then thread each rope through the holes you made in your sticks - one piece of rope to one hole and attach your wood sticks to the short sides of the net. When you finish with this step you should be able to hold one stick, and while someone holds the other stick, stretch the seine net between you.

4. In the final step lay your net out flat like a bed sheet. You will notice the wood sticks you have attached on the shorter edges. On the longer edges between the two sticks you will attack the lead weights on one edge and the packing foam on the other. The edge with the weights will be the bottom the edge with the foam the top.

Once you are finished with your seine net you will need to be careful when storing it. The best way to store it is to wrap it around the two wood sticks and place it in a large bucket by itself so it won't get ripped or tangled.
