Look for plants that are bushy and uniform. Therefore, you want to avoid all plants that are lanky and twiggy. In most cases, when you see plants that fall in this category it is a sign the plant wasn't pruned properly or perhaps didn't receive enough light.
The first rule of thumb is never buy plants that are in full bloom. You will find plants are prone to be more healthy when you transplant them, if you purchase plants that are loaded with buds instead of flowers.
Only purchase plants with healthy leaves. If the leaves are wilted or yellow in color the plant could have root rot. Make certain you are purchasing a plant that has been watered and should be able to tell by looking at the soil in the container.
Next check the roots of your plant. Turn the container over, check to see if the roots are brown and soggy.
The roots should feel firm and look healthy. You should be able to tell if the roots dead and have already passed their prime. If the plant has very little soil in the container or a bunch of soil with very few roots, then you should not buy the plant.
With using these buying guidelines you will be able to purchase healthy plants that haven't been exposed to undue stress and lack of care.
