How to Select Infant Clothes

Shawna Smith
Not thirty years ago, the colors of infants' clothes were very definitely pink for a girl and blue for a boy, reminiscent of Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice that what little girls are made of and boys are frogs and snails, and puppy dog tails! There were many sound economic reasons for that money was tighter and buying infant clothes in one color scheme was cheaper and easier. Those reasons still apply however, the pastel colors are less in vogue now.

Whilst there is a lot to be said for, a single color that color does not have to be pink a toddler in an emerald green jacket with an emerald hood is eminently more spot able in a crowded busy area than a kid in ice blue! However, do bear I n mind that a single color is practical even though bright strong vibrant colors can be better. Any one that has ever given a child more than a second lance will be aware that many mishaps occur twixt cup and lip in the course of a day and if you have only one orange outfit and it gets an ice cream or drink down it then the complete outfit has to be changed. At the end of a week that can give busy mums an ironing pile that can rival the size of the Eiffel Tower.

Practicality is vital for babies' clothes they must be washable in a washing machine. However, the precise fabric chosen will depend on the season and the local climate. Natural fibers are more comfortable in hot humid climates as some man made fibers. Well-designed toddler and infant clothes should not restrict movement as babies can still contort themselves into positions that adults would find untenable.

If you are a first time mum, watch in your Local Park and see how the other toddlers are dressed. Asking other parents can also be beneficial. The staff in baby stores can be a mine of experience regarding suitable purchases. If you are buying clothes for someone else bear I n mind that baby clothes for when a child is born look appealing. Unfortunately, the baby will grow out of them in less than a month so they are not that practical. Mum may have a huge assortment of clothes suitable for three weeks and nothing after that! There is an only so many layer of clothing that a child can be wrapped in!

The precise component of a layette depends on several factors such as whether the child is a first child and geographical location, but as a general rule of thumb, here are some guidelines.

Underwear

In the three month to six month size about four or six cotton garments should be sufficient. These under garments are nearly always made of cotton because it is very washable and children at this age can be sick a lot. They are often made with side snaps so that it is easier to dress the bay and change them when necessary. The design of the underwear whether it be a solid white or a color block or a print is a matter of personal preference and has no impact on the practicality of the garment though they are often simple.

Socks and Booties

Normally six pears are sufficient and a snug fit is more practical, babies kick and try and lose their footwear and the type that are snug are harder to kick off. As a practical guide, it may be appreciated that you buy two identical pairs. That means that if one is lost there is still three left and they are useable.

Hats and Caps

How many caps and hats a child will need does depend on local climate. The colder the climate the more necessary they are, however babies need some protection even in a warm climate, as a lot of body heat is lost through the head. When purchasing headgear remember that it should fit snugly to the head, babies wriggle and they should never be able to bury their head in the fabric. This may mean that they can choke it must keep them warm but be fitted to the head.

Sleeping Wear

The design of sleepwear is an individual choice, but babies sleep a lot and they need more sleepwear than day clothes in the first six months of their life. Normally about six to ten garments will be needed. However, they can come with feet attached to the leggings and this does save on socks. They also have the advantage that when the socks are an integral part of the legging they cannot be kicked off and the baby does not get cold feet. Often these are made of a stretchy fabric so that they do not constrict the babies movements and therefore the blood supply as they sleep.

Sleepwear also comes in a gown rather like a miniature dress and they are used for both boys and girls, the advantage of this type of clothing is that if when you have to change a diaper or nappy in the night you do not have to strip the baby naked to get to it.

There are such things as blanket sleepers but these are necessary only in cold climates
