Stepping out of the traditional is quite hard to attain not to mention the price it would take. The next best thing is to design your own ring but it can be quite expensive. But if you really want a unique wedding ring, go for it. Scout for a jewelry store that does ring setting or made to order shops. There are some who have good craftsmanship at a lesser cost. Don't go for the big name stores, they charge you by the band name, not for the cost of materials and the labor. Ask friends and relatives, they might know someone who works at a jewelry shop and could help you get bigger discounts.

A cheaper alternative is the Tension Set bands. They have attractive design that are not solid and round, but are cut at the center where a stone is elegantly fixed. That makes it really different from the ordinary wedding bands. There are good and bad characteristics to this type of rings.
