The first step in finding the right dog kennel is to do the appropriate amount of research. The internet is quite a tool when it comes to finding out great information and this applies to dog kennels as well. A quick internet search will bring up results of dog kennels in any area of the country. From there, it is upon the dog owner to figure out the particulars of each dog kennel. A simple phone call is often enough to find out what the kennel has going on. They should be able to enlighten dog owners about their care policies and what services they have to offer.
In order to really find the perfect dog kennel, a dog owner must do some investigation of their own, though. A phone call might reveal some of the things that one needs to know about the dog kennel, but nothing can be sure until a dog owner actually walks around the grounds within the kennel. There, one can see how the dogs are treated and what goes on behind closed doors. Dog owners must be careful not to take what they're told as the absolute gospel, as often dog kennels will give a company line about what their care looks like.
The best way to make sure that you're getting exactly what the dog kennel has to offer, it's often best to make a visit to the kennel without calling beforehand. By coming unannounced, dog owners won't be necessarily catching the kennel owners off guard, but they will be able to see the reality of the kennel. Some kennels will not want to give a tour to an owner if they don't make an appointment. These are the kennels that dog owners should be wary of. They are often quite problematic.
Make sure that the dog kennel has the appropriate certifications to be hosting a nice breed of dog. The American Boarding Kennel Association (ABKA) does routine inspections of kennels and is the most trusted board for identifying kennel quality. Make sure that any dog kennel where your dog might stay is certified by this association.
There are certain questions that dog owners must be sure to ask. Where do the dogs eat, sleep, and play? Who will be caring for the dogs during this time? How many times are they fed? Make sure that everything looks tidy and comfortable. Though kennels are obviously not going to be the cleanest place on the planet, they should be tidy enough to provide a sanitary home for your dog.
