How-To Select the Right Pet for You - 7 Things to Consider

Lindsey Russell
Are you in the market for a new pet? There are a few things to consider before you adopt a new pet or purchase one.

1. Commit to a cat, dog, or another pet.

Before you can begin the process of selecting a new pet, you need to decide whether you would like to add a cat, dog, or a more exotic pet to your family. If you already have pets, you will have to consider how the new pet will get along with the others.

2. Decide whether you'd like to purchase or adopt.

Adopting a cat or dog from an animal shelter is a wonderful thing to, but it isn't always the right decision. It can be difficult to tell if the animal was previously abused, how it will interact with humans and other animals, etc. You won't be able to see one or both of the parents, and therefore, you don't always know what you are getting yourself into.

However, when you do decide to purchase a pet, there are several things that you need to look for in a breeder. Are the animals well looked after? Is one or both of the parents on the premises? Are the breeders allowing the puppies and kittens to be sold before they are old enough to leave their parents (normally 8 weeks)? You will also need documentation in order to prove that the kitten or puppy you choose has had his or her first shots.

3. Research breeds.

Whether you are planning to adopt a pet or purchase one, it is a good idea to research different breeds. When you choose a pet, you want to know what to expect in terms of your future pet's personality, needs, and lifespan. Once you have researched the breeds, you will be better able to make a more informed decision.

4. Take your family into consideration.

There may be someone in your family who has a strong like or dislike of a certain type of pet. Someone may have allergies. It is always best to make the addition of a new pet a true family decision. Your new pet will be a member of your family, and as a result, everyone should have a say in which pet is selected.

5. Do you really have the time to properly take care of your new pet?

One of the biggest things to consider when making the decision to bring a new pet home is whether or not you have the time to properly take care of it. All too many pets end up in animal shelters due to the fact that people made too hasty of a decision when selecting a pet. You don't want your relationship with your new pet to end with you taking it to an animal shelter.

6. Would an older pet be a better solution?

Puppies and kittens are a lot of work. However, an older pet in need of a good home might be a better solution. They tend to be overlooked and need a lot of love and attention. More likely than not, you will avoid having to housebreak the pet and/or deal with destructive behavior characteristic of puppies and kittens.

7. Consider other pets that are already in your family.

When you decide to bring home another cat or dog, you will have to consider your other pets as well. Will your cat or dog accept a new animal member of the family? You also have to give consideration as to how you will introduce your pets. There is a lot of wonderful information on websites such as petplace.com. It can give you many more things to consider when choosing a new pet as well.
