How to Sell Antiques Traditionally and Online

Linda Stamberger
Selling antiques online is a fun way to turn a hobby into a profitable business. Selling antiques online without spending a lot of money doesn't have to be difficult. Antiques can be bought inexpensively at garage sales and thrift stores and easily resold online. There are buyers online searching for distinct items to complete their collections.

eBay

The best place to sell antiques online is eBay. The auction site is visited by millions of people. Feedback left by past buyers helps new buyers determine if a seller is trustworthy. Sellers on eBay have the option to list their item for a "buy it now" price. This means an interested buyer can simply purchase an item for a set price instead of an auction type of listing. Check on national and international shipping costs before committing to selling antiques on eBay. Observe how others sell antiques on eBay to get an idea of how other sellers operate their business.

Online Malls

Join an online antique mall. Try an online antique mall first before starting your own website. There are some well-established antique malls that get a lot of traffic, such as Tias.com. High traffic malls are the best virtual malls to sell antiques. Some site memberships offer reasonable monthly fees where hundreds of items can be listed at a time.

Website

Build a website. Use online payment services such as Paypal and acquire a merchant account. With a merchant account you can accept payments for the antiques you sell on your site by utilizing Paypal's shopping cart system. Pick a website company and have them host your site.

Antique Malls

Rent a spot in an antique mall. Try to rent space in a historic district where there is high foot traffic and lots of tourists. Consider investing in a lighted showcase if your spot does not have one. Place expensive items behind glass in the showcase. Sell a variety of antiques at various prices. If you offer only hi-end antiques that are expensive, you may not sell well. If there is a quality mix of items you fare a better chance of having steady sales.

Flea Markets

Sell your antique items at hi-end flea markets. There are many flea markets that draw huge crowds in well-known areas. A hi-end flea market would be one where people expect quality merchandise, and not junky garage sale type of items. These are the type of markets where professional antique vendors generally sell antiques, or pricier items.
