Listing your car online is a much better way to go than simply putting it in the paper, for both the buyer and seller. The seller can have his car seen by a great many people, and thus get a better price for it, and the buyer can have a much greater choice. Rather than purchasing one of the two used cars for sale in town, he can have his pick. A number of websites facilitate online car selling, among them eBay, Craigslist, CarsDirect, Edmunds, and AutoWorld.
The first step in selling your car online is to asses the product you are about to sell. What kind of car is it? How old is it? What's the mileage? Is there anything wrong with it? Who might want it? Ask yourself these questions, and find out what people with similar cars are asking. A good tool to is the Kelley Blue Book list, which will give you the average value for a car of a certain make, model, age, and mileage.
Next, think about where you want to sell the car. As I mentioned before, you have your choice of sites like eBay Motors, Craigslist, CarsDirect, Edmunds, AutoWorld, and AutoTrader. Most of these sites will charge you some kind of listing fee, or perhaps will take a percentage of the sale. Others, such as Craigslist, won't, but websites that don't usually aren't geared specifically towards selling cars. They might not get as much traffic.
Once you know which site or sites you will be using, (and if you are listing on multiple sites make sure each one will let you simultaneously list the car elsewhere) come up with a description of your car. Write down its make, model, year, mileage, color, trim, body type, engine specifications, transmission type, as well as anything that might be wrong with it, cosmetically or functionally. If the car has been well maintained, note this and be prepared to prove it. Take lots of pictures.
Once you've listed your ads, sit back and wait for the fish to bite. Use this opportunity to give your car a good wash and vacuuming out, so it looks more attractive to potential buyers. Be aware that most websites will leave it to you to work out the transaction and settle any disputes.
