How to Sell the Contents of a Storage Unit

Christie Silvers
Storage units are a great asset to those who are low on storage space and high on things that need to be stored. They come in various sizes, price ranges, and some are even environmentally controlled to insure that your contents aren't exposed to the weather. In addition to the traditional storage units, mobile units are also available. These units are delivered straight to your door by the company and picked when you're finished filling them.

Time to Sell

In uncertain economic times, selling the unwanted contents of a storage unit become a way to make fast cash. Having a neatly organized storage unit to start with makes it easier to sort through and decide what needs to sell, what doesn't, and whether or not you want to just sell everything all at once. A neat storage unit also makes for an easier job of selling the contents when prospective buyers stop by to see what you have available.

Yard Sale

One of the most common way to sell the contents of a storage unit is to simply open it up, spread your inventory out, and have a big yard sale. If you can't do this in front of your storage unit, you can move it all back to your house and have it there. That, of course, makes for more work on your end, with the possibility that you'll have to move what doesn't sell right back into your storage unit.

Classifieds

Placing an ad in the the classifieds is another common way to sell the contents of a storage unit. However, you don't have to stick to just the newspaper for listings any longer. Online listings on places like Craigslist, local websites that offer free placement, and even listing an auction on eBay are all great ways to get the sales started and make some extra cash on the items that are taking up space in your storage unit, costing you money each month.

Public Auction

Lastly, there is the option to have a public auction of the entire contents of your storage unit. Some people come to the determination that they simply want to rid themselves of everything all at once. Having a public auction is a quick way to do that. You'll want to do some legwork, such as posting flyers, placing ads, posting auction information online, and letting everyone know about your auction.

Selling the contents of a storage unit can be fast and easy, or planned and scheduled. The choice you make really depends upon how much, or little of your stored merchandise that you'd like to sell, and how fast you want it to go. More planning may bring more income, but a quick sale may help bring in a quicker and much needed emergency income. Only you can decide which is more important to you.
