How to Sell Damaged Gold Jewelry for Cash

Laurie Meekis
Damaged gold does not have to sit around in your drawers or jewelry boxes wasting space. Make some money from the damaged gold jewelry by selling it to a source that will buy it and reuse it. They recycle the old gold you sell them and use it to make new jewelry. It not only recycles, it can bring you needed cash. There are different options available for selling damaged gold. You can sell it in person or mail it in.

Check with local jewelers. Find out if any of them buy old or damaged gold. Some are only looking for pieces that can be resold as they are. They may not take damaged gold jewelry pieces. Other jewelers won't take old gold at all and only buy from suppliers. If you do find jewelers who take old gold, it is a good idea to compare their purchase price. Gold is sold by the carat content and the weight of the piece. If a damaged piece of gold is a higher carat content it will fetch a higher asking price. Be aware that some jewelers will offer a fair price and others may try to pay you less.

Look into places that buy old damaged gold jewelry online. If you choose one of the advertised places shown online or on the television, make sure you check their consumer history and their terms of service. Run a Better Business Bureau search on them if you are hesitating and see if they have customer recommendations or critiques on the website or elsewhere. Some even offer free mailing and will send you a prepaid envelope to send your gold to them in.

Check out their return and purchase policies. A good place will offer a return if you are unhappy with the amount you receive for your old gold. They will also give you an itemized breakdown of what they have purchased from you. They should give an itemized list of what they pay for each carat and type of gold. If you have some way to weigh the gold you are sending them before hand to insure they are paying for the correct weight and type of gold, it is a good idea to know exactly what you are mailing in.

To be extra safe, make sure they list a business phone number that really reaches them so you know it isn't a phony business. Sending something of value off to a company you have not looked into, is a good way to lose the money you were hoping to get for your damaged gold jewelry.

You can also opt to sell your damaged gold jewelry through site like Craigslist, EBay or in a local newspaper, but make sure you know exactly what carat of gold and what weight the items are before you list them for sale and know what the current rates for gold are.

Make sure you are not sending or selling a special family piece, heirloom or significant historical piece or antique that is worth a lot more than the gold content just to get the value of the gold weight in cash. Some gold jewelry pieces, even damaged are more valuable than the gold content because of what they are, who made them or when they were made. It might be better to get the gold repaired by a reputable jeweler than to sell it for the gold weight.

Damaged gold that is sitting around in your jewelry box is a good resource for some cash when you need it. Sell it and make a little money with that junk you have hesitated to throw away. It may be worth a few bucks to sell your damaged gold jewelry.

BE AWARE of where you choose to sell your gold and silver. If you do some price checking, you'll find that your local pawn shops and jewelers will only be paying pennies on the dollar for your items. Instead, consider the Silver And Gold Exchange. They have a professional reputation, no complaints, AND PAY THE MOST! They're a great company to deal with - and very fast!

I would strongly suggest checking out the Silver and Gold Exchange before selling gold or silver to ANYONE. I did a great deal of research, online and offline, and learned a lot about this business. I checked pawn shops, jewelers, "gold parties", hotel "buying events as well as the online buyers, including the "as seen on tv" guys. I found that the Silver and Gold Exchange paid more than anyone else I could find. I liked the fact that they post the prices they pay per gram (beware of the places that quote in pennyweight/DWT) on a live price chart at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com I also checked out their Better Business Bureau report and found they have never had a single complaint as opposed to HUNDREDS of complaints some other companies have! I recommend them 100%

I wouldn't feel comfortable mailing my gold off. Maybe I can sell that old wedding ring to a local place. Good idea!
