How to Send an iPhone MMS Text Message After OS3.1 Update

The Long Awaited Feature is Now a Reality!

Glenn Magas
The release of iPhone OS3.1 (September 25, 2009) allows iPhone owners to finally send photos via text message. The long awaited feature is now a reality for those who upgrade to OS3.1 and the carrier to AT&T 5.5. If you are new to an iPhone, if you do not text a lot, or are not iPhone savvy like some, here are step by step instructions on how to send a picture by text messaging. Make sure to that the iPhone is upgraded with OS3.1 and the AT&T 5.5 carrier. To do this:

*Tap Settings
*Tap General
*Tap About

Check to see if the version is 3.1 and Carrier is AT&T 5.5. If these are correct, you can text a picture to another phone that accepts MMS.

There are two ways to send a picture through texting. The first way is:

1) Send an MMS from chat:

* Tap Messages
* Tap the pencil icon to create a new message
* Fill in the To: field
* Type in a message in the message field if you like

Next to the message field there is a new camera icon.

* Tap the camera icon

You can either take a photo right now or choose an existing photo from your photo library. Once you've done one or the other--

* Tap Send

-and your picture is sent via text!

2) Send an MMS from your photo app

* Tap the Photo App
* Tap the photo you would like to send
* Tap the share button on the bottom left
* Tap MMS
* Fill out the To: field (you can even type a message under the photo you see)
* Tap Send

-and your picture is sent via text!

Sending an MMS via text with your iPhone is simple, easy, and finally a feature iPhone users waited patiently to have. You don't have to hear it from those Blackberry folks who say, 'you guys don't even have MMS, what kind of phone is that?' Well, iPhone does have MMS, Video (3Gs only), and a built in iPod. iPhone owners don't have to buy a new phone for new features. They just upgrade to the new firmware/OS and its like a new Smart Phone in their hands - for free.

Hopefully the next step-by-step iPhone users will need to learn will be tethering - connecting their laptop to their iPhone via bluetooth in order to connect to the internet through the 3G network. Until then, enjoy MMS with your iPhone!
