More and more people are taking advantage of the Internet to send files to each other, displacing sending CDs or DVDs through the postal mail. However, in doing so, it can be complicated as to the best method. Sending anything through normal email is limited to file size in megabytes or long delays due to transmission speeds and network congestion. Because of this, I routinely recommend using a website like http://www.yousendit.com to send files from one location to another, or to many people at the same time. There are several advantages to this method.
- The transfer is a secure method due to the nature of the site and to the encryption you put on the documents.
- The files do not stay in your inbox of sent box, they are located for seven days on the yousendit.com servers
- Using this method allows you to take advantage of the virtual storage space allocated to you by yousendit.com
It is recommended you also invest in a program called Winrar for added flexibility in creating your compressed files but it is not required.
STEP ONE: COMPRESSING YOUR FILES
Locate folder with files in it
Right click on file you want to send
Left click on "add to archive"
Click in the circle marked "zip file"
Left click on "advanced" tab at top
STEP TWO: SETTING YOUR PASSWORD
Left click on "set password"
Enter password you want to set
Re-enter password you want to set
Click "OK"
Click "OK"
Note that you can see the ZIP file in the folder
STEP THREE: SENDING THE FILES VIA THE INTERNET
Open Internet Explorer on desktop and go to http://www.yousendit.com
Type in recipient's email address in the top row
Type in your address in the second row
Click on Browse and locate zip file you have created (it will be in the same folder as the original file)
Left click on Send it
Confirm the file uploads and sends
A confirmation will be sent to your email address
Once sent you can now delete the ZIP file you created in the directory on the server
