How to Set Up Your Dream Home Bedroom Decor

The bedroom is an intimate quiet place in your house, and therefore; should be someplace you are able to relax, unwind and be comfortable. Often, it is the first room you wish to re-do when you buy a new home, and sadly, people often leave the bedroom décor as the last room to be re-created. With a little money, and a little know how, even the ugliest bedroom can be transformed into a dream bedroom.

Changing the wall coverings: If you have ugly walls, you may want to start with removing the old wallpaper. Removing ugly wallpaper is relatively simple, a bucket of soapy water and a scraper and you should have drop cloths, and garbage bags standing by. Never, place new wallpaper over old, as it may not stick properly, and the old pattern may bleed through. New wallpaper can be picked up on sale at most do-it-yourself centre's or bargain shops, and if you have a relatively small room, you can buy discontinued stock, just make sure you buy enough!

Painting is another option; if your walls are paper free, then painting is a breeze. If you are covering up an especially loud color, use an undercoat paint first, then apply two coats of your choice of color, to prevent bleeding through of the old paint. Again, look for paint sales, and discontinued stock, I myself bought our bathroom paint for $10 a gallon, and it was lovely.

Changing the flooring: Changing the flooring need not be a huge issue or terribly expensive, with a little know how. First determine what sort of flooring suits your lifestyle, and then decide what you can afford. If you have a carpeted bedroom, and it is faded, or worn to the point of being threadbare, and looking at it gives you chills, it's probably best to remove it. Loosen it around the edges around the perimeter of the room, with the aid of a utility knife, should ease it out to the point where you can roll it up and bag it. If it is a very old carpet, you may find that cutting it out is the only option.

When my husband and I moved into our home several years ago, there was an absolutely hideous orange shag 1970's carpet in our bedroom. Not having much money, and deciding that anything was better than looking at this carpet, we decided to rip it out. Underneath, was clear, strong plywood floor. We decided to buy some off white floor paint to open up the look of our bedroom, and put an area rug under the bed, that extended out to the sides. The change was amazing, and cheap; we picked the 8 x 10 area rug up at an auction for $50 and the paint and brushes only cost us $30. What a transformation.

All about lighting: Now that you have nice walls and a floor, you actually want to be able to see them! Lighting does not need to be a huge issue, and can be as simple as changing some light shades. If you have a large overhead light that works for you, try using low wattage bulbs, to give a soft glow. No lights at all, try the 3 point lighting system. A floor lamp over by the closet, and two bed side lamps, this should give you ample lighting.
