How to Set Up Gmail in Microsoft Outlook 2002 (Without the Test Email Failing)

Because Google Isn't God

Dotchi Latham
While trying to set up my gmail in Microsoft Outlook 2002 I ran into the problem of my "test email" failing every time. Sound familiar? I went to my online Google email account for help but the walk through they gave me had the same result with "test email" failing.

Follow this walk through and you're gmail account will be ready to use in Microsoft Outlook 2002.

If POP is enabled on your gmail account skip to Step 2.
If POP is not enabled start with Step 1.

Step 1:
- Log into your gmail account online.
- Click on "settings" in the top right hand corner.
- Choose "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" at the top of the yellow box.
- Select "Enable POP for all mail" or "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on"
- At the bottom of the yellow box select "Save Changes".

Step 2:
- Now that POP is enabled, open your Microsoft Outlook 2002. Select "tools" and then "e-mail accounts".
- A box will pop up for email accounts. Select "Add a new e-mail account" and click "next".
- Select "POP3" and click "next".

Step 3:
- Fill in your name and e-mail address.
- For "Incoming mail server (POP3)", type "pop.googlemail.com"
- For "Outgoing mail server (SMTP)", type "smtp.googlemail.com"
- For "User Name" add "@gmail.com" behind your username so your user name is now your email address.

Step 4:
- Click "More Settings ..." above the "Cancel" button.
- Select the "Outgoing Server" tab and select "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authenication".

Step 5:
- Select the "Advanced" tab.
- Under "Incoming Server (POP3)" select "This server requires an SSL-secured connection". The number in the box will change to "995". Leave that. It's correct.
- Under "Outgoing server (SMTP)" select "This server requires an SSL-secured connection". Where the number is "25" change it to "587". Google instructions says to change it to something else. But 587 actually works.
- Under "Server Timeouts" slide the bar so that it says "5 minutes" or higher.
- Click "OK" at the bottom of the box.

Step 6:
-
This will take you to the "E-mail Accounts" box again. Click on "Test Account Settings" and watch all the green check marks pop up one by one.
- Close the Test Account box.
- Click the "Next >" button. Then the "Finish" button.

Now go check your email!
