1. Categorize your goals according to the area of you life they pertain to. For instance, you can write goals that relate to your business or career success, personal and financial goals,and goals to better your health or achieve certain fitness goals. Maybe you have goals in mind that might help you grow socially, whether it is with friends or family. Most people also have spiritual goals. Now that you know what areas of you life you want to work on you can begin seperating the goals into categories.
2. Set an end time for each goal. The prospective "due date" is part of what makes a goal become a dream. We can carry dreams around with us forever, taking them to the grave...or we can set a plan in motion to achieve them.
3. Break down large objectives are turn them into small objectives. Step number three goes hand in hand with step number two. For example, if your main goal is to be in good health and reality says that you need to lose forty pounds to get to your desired weight...you will need to break down your goal into smaller steps to make it seem more attainable. Forty pounds is a significant amount of weight to lose and it will take time to achieve a goal such as this. Breaking down your goal in manageable bites will help you feel a sense of accomplishment and help encourage you along the way. You can do this by making mini goals like losing five pounds in the next month. Make another goal of going to the gym twice a week and move on from there. Setting smaller goals with shorter time frames will help you to not feel so overwhelmed and you will be less likely to bail out if you see these mini goals being achieved.
4. Set progressively loftier goals in the context of one, five, and ten year goals. A good example would be..."I want to write a book within the next year", "I want to get my book published within five years", "I want to make a name for myself in my genre of writing". All of these goals pertain to a certain time frame and help you to keep your eye focused on the bigger picture.
5. Always be positive when setting goals. "I will walk two to four miles a week", instead of "I will stop laying around and being lazy". Never sell yourself short or demean yourself. Being positive may be the most important aspect of achieving your goals, Your head has to be focused in the right direction or you will ultimately fail.
6. Goals need to be visible/observable. This means they need to be in your face. Make note cards with your goals, laminate them and post them on your fridge, in the restroom, on a coffee table, or by the alarm clock. Seeing them when you wake up will help remind you what direction you are heading every single day.
7. Keep track of your progress. Whether it is a journal or a "goal box", keep track of your achievements. A written record will help you to look back and reflect on the progress you are making. Visibly seeing goals achieved is the best self esteem booster anyone can have. It will help to reinforce what you are trying to do and why you have been working so hard to obtain your goals.
These tips will help you successfully achieve your goals. It will take a manner of discipline and dedication if you want to be truly successful in achieving the goals you have set for yourself. Keep in mind that nothing worthwhile ever comes easy...as the old saying goes. The truly successful people choose to overcome obstacles and learn from their mistakes along the way. The most important thing to learn is not to make the same mistakes twice and use every failure as a tool to better yourself in the future.
