How to Set Up a Hermit Crab Tank

Hermit crabs come from warm climates and are social animals, which means their new home needs to reflect it. They are excellent pets for any age, including those just learning pet responsibility. Setting up a hermit crab cage in a way the pet will feel most comfortable is vital for him to thrive and survive.

Tank

A plastic or glass tank with a lid is ideal for the hermit crab. Avoid small tanks as there is not enough room for your pet and his friends to wander around. A large tank is much better and will provide enough room and comfort.

Temperature

Considering hermit crabs are from warm climates, they feel most comfortable in a tank that has a heat source, which you can purchase from a pet store. You should keep the temperature of the tank at approximately 73 degrees. Make sure not to put the tank near a window, air conditioner or fan where there is a strong possibility of it being too cold or too hot for the animal. The humidity of the tank must also be at about 70% for optimal comfort; use a hygrometer to make sure of the correct level.

Dishes

Food and water dishes must be shallow so the hermit crab has easy access to get in and out but deep enough that he can sit in the water.

Cage Decorations

Hermit crabs need decor that they can climb on such as rocks. One option is to use reptile rocks and climbing branches, both of which are available at pet stores. You can also pick up climbing background, which is typically made from coconut fiber. It also absorbs water so it helps with the humidity levels in the tank. Fake plants can work well in the tank as well. You must also purchase several hermit crab shells that are larger than the one your hermit crab is already in.

Sand

Also known as substrate, the sand provides a space and enough room for your hermit crab to dig and burrow into. Pick up a bag of hermit crab sand, which often comes in a bright color.

Although hermit crabs seem like zero effort pets that need little to no attention, It is important to make sure they have everything they need in the proper environment. Considering they are social animals, you must have other hermit crabs in the tank with them.
