We will see in this article how to install and use the peer to peer (P2P) software TribalWeb. TribalWeb is a p2p software that is promising for several reasons:
- It allows you to do peer to peer privately, friends only
- The software is very easy to use
- It allows exchanging all types of files
- The transfer speed is theoretically unlimited
- Only members in your network see your files
- Only the sender and recipient are aware of the transfer, exchanges are encrypted over a VPN
- There is a free version
You can download the program from here:
http://www.tribalweb.net/tour/
Step 1: Install the program
Once you've downloaded tribalweb_setup.exe just click it, the program will launch.
Accept the terms of service by clicking "I accept".
Select a directory or leave default.
Click Next, then the next window will inform you that the installation of TribalWeb was completed successfully.
Step 2: Create a user account
TrialWeb uses port 3728 for its transfers. This port needs to be open.
Once installation is complete, you should have the next window appear.
If you do not have a user account, click on "Create a new user".
Here, you are asked to choose a username and enter your email address. When this is done, click "Create" and an email will be sent containing the password associated with your user name. Be sure to write down your username and password for later use!
Step 3: Setting up and using TribalWeb.
When your user account is created, you should be redirected automatically to the main interface of TribalWeb.
Enter your username and password and click next. You will be identified and arrive on your TribalWeb interface.
At startup, you're the only user of your network, you must invite more friends if you have left their user names, then you can begin to exchange files and communicate.
There are 5 main tabs:
- Network: the tab where you will see users on your network (and only them), in which you can save data
- Search: In this tab you can search files / folders being shared by your friends
- Transfers: In this tab you'll see the status of all transfers during which you (sending and receiving)
- Discussion: messaging TribalWeb where you can talk with your friends, and receive messages such as system also requests for invitations
- Premium: Information tab on the version of TribalWeb
Step 4: The Network tab
I will not explain all the tabs, they are very intuitive and well made. Just remember to look far to the left, and also look at the right click where you have few options. I will just focus on the network tab.
We'll see how to put things in particular shares. Put yourself on the "Network", you should see your username with a small computer icon, double-click the icon and you should see the tree of your computer. Then pull down the directories to reach the one you want to share and right-click this folder to share.
Click "Share" on the confirmation window that opens, and your directory will become shared.
You can then repeat as many times as desired on other directories, to share others. From there, your shared directories and all they contain are visible to other users. They can find your files by using the search tab. Of course this step is vital for file sharing in P2P software.
Now, to invite a user in your TribalWeb, you will have click on the icon in the upper right.
Then in the window that appears, enter their user name that you will release and press "Next" to confirm.
The purpose of this tutorial was to help you get started with TribalWeb, which offers an aspect of peer to peer between friends rather interesting and promising. Its intuitive interface is very simple to use. It is rumoured that a version of TrialWeb will be coming to the Iphone and Ipod Touch very soon. Let's hope they keep the same features on those mobile devices!
