How to Set Up a Place for Homeschooling
Picking the Right Area and Filling it with the Proper Things is Essential for a Great Space
When selecting a space, keep in mind you do not need an entire room in most cases. A corner of a room is usually sufficient as long as it is totally designated for school and nothing else. Be sure that the place you choose is free from distractions. For example, the corner of living room or family room may not be the best place to choose because of the distractions from the television. Just like a busy kitchen that sees a lot of traffic may also get your child sidetracked with other family members coming in and out periodically. You may even choose to put the work station in the child's room. If this is your choice, be sure to check on the child often to be sure that they don't start playing with toys in the middle of their math lesson.
Furnishing the space you choose is also vital to making the space functional. A good desk is the focal point of the area and the workspace for your child. A good desk should have plenty of room to write on or even do simple art projects. It should also have a drawer or other place to store books, paper, and other school-related materials. If storage space is short, you may want to supplement the desk with a book case or utility cart. If you are using a computer, be sure that the desk is accommodating to holding your PC, but leaves enough room for your child to do other tasks. To accompany your child's desk, be sure that you pair it with a comfortable chair. This chair should have proper back support and feel good enough to sit in for a solid hour or more. A second chair near their work station for you is also handy when instructing them in their lessons or observing their work.
In addition to a desk and chair, a few other things are important to setting up your child's home schooling space. Proper lighting is crucial. Home schooling doesn't have regular hours always and your child may become more comfortable doing school work in the evenings. If this is the case, you may not be able to rely solely on natural lighting for the area. Invest in at least a good desk lamp so that they can see their work with ease. Other things like their own pencil sharpener and wastebasket will prevent them from making excuses to leave their desk and keep them focused on their school work.
Regardless of where you put your child's study area or what you fill it with, make sure it is an area that is pleasant and conducive to learning. A space that both you and your child will enjoy will make school time more pleasurable and educational for the both of you.
