Everything You Need to Know to Edit Profile on Myspace

Chris Beason
First, go to www.myspace.com. Look near the top right-hand side of your screen and click on the orange button that says SIGN UP! On the next screen you will need to fill in all the boxes with the information requested. Make sure that your email address is typed in correctly. You will need to be able to receive email from Myspace in order to finish setting up your Myspace page. You will also need to make sure your password isn't too easy for hackers to guess. I recommend using letters and numbers in your password. Next, you will need to click on the box next to where it says you agree to Myspace's terms and conditions. Now click on the orange button that says Sign Up. Next you'll need to Verify Your Account by typing in the box below the image, the letters shown in the image. If you have trouble reading the text that is in the image, you can click on the gray circle with two circling arrows inside it and it will give you another image. Once you've typed in the text you can click Continue to My Account.

The next screen will allow you to upload photos. If you don't want to upload any photos you can click on Skip for now that is in blue located on the left-hand side below the box. To upload pictures, you'll need to have photos already on your computer and know where they are stored. Most of the time when you upload photos to your computer, they are stored under the folder My Pictures. To upload your photo to Myspace click Browse.... If you are using Windows XP, you can get to My Pictures by clicking on My Documents shown on the left hand side of the box that will pop up and then double-click on the folder My Pictures. Find the picture that you want to upload, click on it and then click Open. The box on the left-hand side next to Browse... will have the path to where your picture is located on your computer. Next click on the button that says Upload.

After clicking Upload, the next screen to come up will say Invite Your Friends To Myspace! You can click Skip for now that is in blue located on the right-hand side at the bottom of the box. To invite your friends to Myspace, type in the email addresses in the box next to the orange words To: making sure that you separate them with commas (i.e., Annette_beason@yahoo.com, chris_annee@yahoo.com). In the box next to the orange words Optional Body: you can type a message to your friends (i.e., Hey! Isn't my new Myspace page the coolest!) When your happy with your message and you have all your friends email addresses entered, click on the orange button that says Invite.

Now you should have a screen that has Verify your email address! in red letters inside a box near the top left-hand side of your screen. Underneath the words Verify your email address! will be the words Click Here in blue. Don't "click here" yet. First, you will need to check your email. You should have an email from Welcome to Myspace. The subject line will read Myspace Account Confirmation. If you don't see it in your inbox, try checking your bulk mail or junk/spam mailbox. If you don't see an email from Welcome to Myspace, then you'll need to go back to the screen that has Verify your email address! and then click on Click Here. If you've closed or left that screen to check your email, just go back to www.myspace.com. Type in your email address and password and click the button that says Login. Your screen will be back and you can now click on Click Here. Double-check to make sure your email address is correct and then click on the button that says Request Verification Email. Myspace will send you another email and you'll need to check your email again to see if you have received it. Once you receive the email, open it and read it. Underneath Please confirm your MySpace account by clicking here: there will be a link that you need to click on. You should then see a screen that says in red letters Email address verified! Now click on the words in blue that read Return to Home.

The red box asking you to verify your email address will be gone. You should see another red box with the words Pick your Myspace Name/URL! in red and the words Click Herein blue below it. Click on Click Here. The screen will tell you what your display name is, however, you are not picking your display name now, you are picking the name that will be assigned to your Myspace page forever. Your URL name is kind of like a tattoo, so make sure it's something you can live with for the rest of your Myspace life. Once you've decided on a name, type it in the box under Pick your Myspace Name/URL:and again in the box under Confirm your Myspace Name/URL:. Now click on the button that says Submit. A box will popup telling you that if you click OK you can NEVER change it. If you're sure you want this to be your Name/URL then click OK. Just in case you weren't sure the first time, another box will popup asking if you're really sure you want this name. If you're really, really sure then click OK. The screen may say in red Error: This username is not available! (This username has been taken by another user). That means that someone else already has the name that you've picked and you'll need to think of something else and repeat what you just did. Once you've picked a name that is unique to your own identity, your screen will say Good job, Whateveryournameis.

You will now see a box on the right-hand side of your screen that asks you to enter your real name. Your real name will not be shown on your Myspace page unless you used it as your Name/URL, you used it as your display name or you put it somewhere on your Myspace page. However, if you use your real name here and someone searches for you by your real name, they will be able to find your Myspace page. If you do not want to enter your real name, then you can click on the words in blue that say Skip. Otherwise, enter your name and click Submit. The screen will tell you your username, Myspace URL, real name and display name.

Near the top of your screen you will see the words Home, Browse, Search, Invite, etc. in a light blue bar. Click on the word Home. On the left-hand side of your screen you will see a blue box with Hello, Whateveryourdisplaynameis! Now we will begin to enter the information you want on and associated with your Myspace page.

Next to your picture under your display name click on the words in blue that say Edit Profile. In this section, all the information you enter will be seen on your profile page. To see your profile page click on the words View My Profile located near the top of your screen on the right-hand side just below the light blue bar with the words Home, Browse, Search, Invite, etc. in it. Now go back to the Edit Profile page either by clicking Back on your browser or by clicking Home in the light blue bar near the top and then click on Edit Profile. The text you enter in the box next to Headline: will show up next to your picture on your profile page. This is where you will put in your favorite saying, quote or whatever is on the top of your head at the moment. You can change your headline and any of the information on this page as often as you like.

The About Me: and I'd Like to Meet: sections are where you will enter information about yourself and the people you'd like to meet. This information will be displayed on the right-hand side of your page. The About Me: section is also where you will paste any code for a Myspace layout or background. You can paste code for your layout below any information that you enter here. The information you enter in the boxes next to Interests:, Music:, Movies:, Television:, Books: and Hereos: will be displayed on the left-hand side of your profile page. They will be displayed as links unless you enter in the box where you don't want your text to be clickable links. The can be entered anywhere in the box. At the top of the page above Headline: or the bottom of the page below Hereos: click on the button that says Save All Changes. Under the words Interests & Personality, you'll see the words Interests & Personality, Name, Basic Info, Background & Lifestyle, Schools, Companies, Networking, Song & Video on Profile. Click on Name. This is where you can change your display name, as well as your real name. If you make any changes to the information here, click the button that says Save Changes.

Now click on Basic Info. This is where you will enter information about yourself that will appear near the bottom of the left-hand side of your profile page. This information is optional, but you must select the region where you are located in order to Save Changes. If you make any changes to the information here, click the button that says Save Changes.

Next you will click on Background & Lifestyle. You can choose to answer these questions or not. However, if you don't answer the question Marital Status: you will automatically be displayed and searched as Single. If you make any changes to the information here, click the button that says Save Changes. This information will appear under Yourdisplayname's Details near the bottom of the left-hand side of your profile page.

The next category you will click on is Schools. This information is optional. If you want to add the information about where you attend/attended school, it will be displayed near the bottom of the left-hand side of your profile page. To add this information, you will need to enter your school's name in the box next to School Name:, pick the Country: where it is located, and the State/Province: that your school is in. Next click on the button that says Search. The next screen will show the school's names in blue that match what you entered. If you do not see the name of your school, you can select the City: where your school is located to see a complete list of the schools. When you see the name of your school in blue, click on it. On this screen, the information is optional. Enter all or as much information you want and click on the button that says Submit.

Now click on Networking. The information you enter here is optional and will appear underneath the box Yourdisplayname's Details in a box called Yourdisplayname's Networking near the bottom of the left-hand side of your profile page. You can enter as many networking categories as you'd like. You can also go back and edit or delete this information in the future. If you add or make any changes to the information here, click the button that says Save Changes.

The last category for you to click on is Song & Video on Profile. You can add a song or video to play when your profile page is viewed by clicking the words in blue that say Find a band in Myspace Music or Find a video in Myspace Video. Once you add a song or video to your page, this is also where you will go to remove them or change them.

To add a song, near the top on the right-hand side of your screen, enter the name of the band that plays the song you want and click on the button that says Search. Next you'll click on the icon for the band which will take you to their Myspace page. On the right-hand side of their profile page you will click on the words Add next to the song you want to add to your profile page. After you click Add, the next screen will ask if you really want to add the song to your profile. If you really want to add the song to your profile, click the button that says Add Song To Profile. A small "player" showing the song and band will be displayed on the left-hand side of your profile page.

To add a video, at the top of the screen you need to enter a keyword for a video and click the button that says Search. After you've found the video you want, click the link Add to Profile under the video. Your video will be displayed underneath the Who I'd like to meet: section on your profile page. To go back to the screen you were on, you need to look at the top of your screen near the right-hand side in the dark blue bar for the words and click on Myspace Home, then Edit Profile, and then Song & Video on Profile. Now you can change the color of the "video holder" on your profile page by selecting the colors you want and clicking the button that says Save.

If you decide that you don't want a Myspace page after all, you need to click on Home in the light blue bar near the top of the page. Next click on Account Settings that will be to the right of your profile picture. Near the bottom of the page you will see a section called Account Cancellation. Click on the words in blue that say Cancel Account. The screen will then have a yellow box asking if you're really sure that you want to cancel your account and reminding you of all your hard work building your page. If you've changed your mind, click on the button that says Keep My Account. If you are really sure you want to cancel your account click on the button that says Cancel Account. Now you'll see another screen with a yellow box. Below in the box beside Cancellation Comments: you can enter the reason you are canceling your account. This is optional. You have another chance to keep your account, but if you are really, really sure click Cancel Account. Next you'll need to check your email and look for one from Myspace Admin with the subject line Myspace account cancellation request - please confirm. Open the email and click on the link below where it says In order to complete the cancellation process, please click on the link below:. Once again you'll have a screen with a yellow box and below that if you are really, really, really sure you want to cancel your account click Cancel Account, but just in case you've changed your mind and want to keep your Myspace page, click on Keep My Account.
