How to Set Up Virtual DJ

Jennifer Hammitt
There are many software options for DJs. Each of them have their benefits and drawbacks. If you are looking for a software that will allow you to make playlists, access all your digital music, run karaoke, and run video, Virtual DJ may be a good option for you. There are a few things you need to know before you run your first show.

The first thing you will need to do is determine which interface you want to use. As soon as you boot up the software, it is going to ask you what interface to load. Basically, it wants to know what "skin" you want to use. The simplest interface is the DJ Basic. The next interface is Full. It has more options and effects including the loop sampler. Full Video is the third option. Basically this has all the things the Full interface has plus boxes to show the videos. There is on box for the active video and video in each deck. The final option is Internal Mixer. The interface is a nicer looking, more professional, and more versatile version of the Full Interface. Pick the interface you would like to start with and click OK. You can take a look at each of the skins by switching them through the configuration tab. Go to the skins tab and select the skin you would like to see.

Of course you want your audio to be high quality. To help ensure this, make sure your audio settings are set to the right specifications. Click on the configuration tab. It should be located on the top of the skin and labeled config. There is a set of drop down menus. Be sure to pick the correct options for your sound card, mixer, and setup up. Always test your settings before you run your first show. Some of the settings are very particular. Just having one wrong option selected can result in poor audio quality or worse, your signal is only making it to one speaker.

If you are going to be using Virtual DJ to display your videos, slide shows or for karaoke, you will need to set up the program to send the video signal. Make sure your computer that is plugged into the system and it is connected to the external screen and or television. First extend your computer's desktop is extended to the other television or screen. You do this through your desktop setting options. Open of the configuration menu and then click on the video tab. The software defaults to playing the video in a window on the computer. You will need to select and activate the other display options.

Take a look at the bells and whistles. Look at the other options on the configuration menu. Change and adjust the defaults to your specifications. This may take some trial and error, so be patient.
