How to Setup a Charity

A Quick 5 Step Plan to Starting Your Own Charity

Mike Burnside
A charity gives many of us the opportunity to provide a better situation for others. Whether it is providing hot meals, keeping someone from being lonely or inspiring others to find the best in themselves, charities have been the foundation. However, not all situations have charities to begin with. Fear not, there are some simple tips on setting up and starting your own charity. Follow these guidelines and before you know it, your charity will be up and running.

1. Start a Charity by Finding a Cause
All charities start with a cause, something that is either close to your heart, or a recent news story that makes you want to take action. Much like starting a business, many charities start as an idea that blossoms.

2. Start a Charity by Finding Experts to Help
Setting up a charity has been done many times by many people; use their expertise to guide you. Do some research on the internet to find out where your charity can be the most helpful. The Society for Nonprofit Organizations snpo.org has a helpful 12-step plan to guiding you through starting your charity.

3. Start a Charity by Seeking Tax Help
Setting up a charity comes with some tax responsibilities. It is important that you understand the tax-exempt status for your charity. There are certain exemption requirements for soliciting donations into your charity. Check the internet for legitimate sites addressing these requirements.

4. Start Your Charity by Networking
The big thing in getting the word out for most charities is social networking. Create a website; get a page on Facebook, start blogging about your charity. The object is to get your charity noticed and making it a household name in your community. Ask to speak to the program director at your local church, library, or synagogue to help get the word out on your charity. Also, look to network with other charities that could benefit both. Solicit their help and combine strengths to help each other reach your goals.

5. Start a Charity by Knowing Your Strengths
All of us have different skills that we bring to an organization. Some of us are better at soliciting money, while others are better at organizing activities. Find your niche and work at it. For those skills your not as good at, find people who can help out. Solicit a web designer who can help you build the better website, or find someone who is good at organizing that fundraising walk your charity will need.
