How to Setup a Portable Air Conditioner

John Messina
Portable air conditioners are an alternative to window or wall mount units and may be favored by some people. There are a few things to consider when purchasing a portable air conditioner. The steps outlined line below will give you an idea of what's involved in setting up a portable air conditioner.

Step1:
Portable Air Conditioners require venting. The location you pick for your portable air conditioner will need to be near a window so you can vent the warm indoor air through the venting duct. The vent is much like the type found on a gas clothes dryer.

Step2:
When installing the exhaust hose from the portable air conditioner to the vent make sure that you keep the hose straight as possible. There can't be any sharp turns in the hose. Also do not extend the hose any longer than the length it comes in.

Step3:
Make sure that you have an AC outlet that will supply enough power to the portable air conditioner without tripping the circuit breaker. Look for EER of 10 or better. This will save you some money on your electric bill.

Step4:
Change the Air Filters regularly. Some portable air conditioners have a carbon filter to remove odors and air a filter to remove dust particles. The air filter is usually washable or can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. The carbon filter (if unit is equipped with one) will need to be replaced.

Step5:
Water removal from a portable air conditioner is usually done by a collection tray or a drainage hose. Be sure that water tray is emptied as required otherwise the unit will either shutoff or over flow onto the floor. Consult your owner's manual for details.
