How to Sew Hanger Covers

This is one of my favorite recycling projects ever!

I have made these using old fleece, flannel, twill, denim, and larger fabric scraps from finished projects. I use plastic hangers, I only keep a couple wire ones around for my suit case/carrier (the plastic ones just don't fit in the holder.)
But, it doesn't matter what you use because you make the pattern with your hangers. So if you have different style hangers in your closet make a pattern for each, the opening may be different.

OK, so to begin take the hanger & lay it on some paper (newspaper, cardboard, whatever you have that the hanger fits on) and trace the hanger. Now take a ruler & add 1/2" around the sides & bottom. When you get to the hook part draw a semi circular dip (half moon) some hangers are reinforced here needing a larger opening than a hanger that is narrower. Make sure all lines are solid & then cut the pattern out.

For Fleece: Cut 2
For Fabric: Cut 4

Lay pattern on the fabric & cut correct number of pieces.

For Fleece: On each piece press 1/2" hem on the dip & bottom edge if it is unfinished. Most fleece does not need to be hemmed, you could leave the edge raw or trim it with a pinker. Sew the hook opening hem close to the folded edge.

Pin right sides together. Sew 1/2" seam around upper curved part, stopping at hook opening. To finish seam back tack on last stitches. Press & turn right side out, press again. Slide over hanger & pull down, then use!

For Fabric: I have made these only using 2 pieces with a 1" bottom hem, but usually I use 4 pieces (if you decide to do 2 pieces follow above directions for fleece only add 1" to bottom before you cut. Press the bottom hem & sew hem) Place 2 pieces right side together. Pin in place leaving a 2" opening on the upper curved part sew 1/4" seam all the way around. Turn right side out through opening & press. Do the same for the other 2 pieces.

Now place your finished pieces "right" sides together , pin & sew 1/4" seam along upper curved lines, leaving opening for hook & bottom. Press, turn right side out, press & slide onto hanger.

Now you have covers for your hangers. I have most of my hangers covered & have started covering my daughters toddler sized hangers. They are great for keeping her little sun dresses on the hangers in the closet.
