How to Sew Men's Trousers

Viktoria Carrella
Men's dress pants are also known as trousers and can be made relatively simply at home. There are many reasons to make men's trousers at home, including the increasing cost of clothing, time and effort of finding a pattern or color you enjoy, and even the pride in showing off your creations. Few men may be familiar with sewing terms.

Items Required to Make Men's Trousers
Pattern for trousers in width and length required
Length of fabric required by the pattern
Scissors
Sewing machine
Thread and needle for sewing machine
Thread and needle for hand-stitching

Step One:
Lay the fabric out on a flat surface and pin the pattern to the fabric. Cut out the pattern on top of the fabric and then remove the entire pattern from the fabric. Patterns can be bought at fabric stores or ordered or downloaded online.

Step Two:
Thread and needle the sewing machine along with your bobbin, and lay the right leg of the pants front and back on the machine and sew up the outer seam with a straight line. Make sure that the material is inside out while sewing, so that seams are on the inside of the trousers. There is no need to reinforce the seams.

Step Three:
Lay the left leg inside out on the sewing machine and sew in the same manner as the right leg. Now sew up the inside of the right and left legs separately on the machine, and leave the crotch area open.

Step Four:
Sew the crotch area by using a reinforced straight stitch by hand. Start at the outer edges of the crotch area and sew both sides of the left leg together, then repeat on the right side. There will be a small hole left in the center of the crotch, and this should be sewn by a loop stitch and reinforced.

Step Five:
Lay the pants with the rear section up on the sewing machine. Sew in a straight line, with reinforced ends to finish the seat of the pants. Fold over the last 2 inches of the waistband and sew in a straight stitch all the way around for pants with no zipper or fly.

Step Six:
Lay the pants legs on the sewing machine with the pants inside out. Sew a half inch hem to the pants to finish the legs.

You can also add belt loops if desired. They are easily made with strips of leftover material and a quick straight stitch with the sewing machine.

Excellent tutorial Viktoria. It's been a very long time since I made a pair of men's trousers. I remember the hardest part was getting the inseam to fit right.
