To Sew a Pocket you will need:
Fabric
Sewing Machine
Scissors
Tape Measure
Thread
Interfacing (optional)
To get started you need to decided what size pocket you want to add to your bag or purse. A cell phone pocket, baby bottle pocket, storage pocket, or any pocket.
Once you now how large you want it to be, then add on 1 inch to the length and width. Now, take the bottom and fold it over one inch to create a nice edge. Iron down.
Take each side and fold it in ½ inch to create clean sidelines. Iron down as well.
Finally, repeat this step on the top of the fabric pocket.
If you are using a light weight fabric or even medium weight fabric you will want to iron on a piece of fusible interfacing to the back. Cut this out to fit about 1/8 of an inch smaller than your pocket. It will hold the ironed down flaps neatly as well, which is an awesome look.
Now, on to sewing g the pocket into the bag or purse.
You will want to sew the pocket into place while the bag is cut out, but unassembled. Take the piece of liner fabric where you want the pocket to go ahead and lay it flat on the table.
Place the pocket on the fabric liner. Tip: Make sure this is centered so that is will not interfere with the actual process of sewing the bag together.
Now, start on the top left of the pocket and sew down along the edge. You want to sew close to the edge as possible. Work around the bottom and then up the other side.
Sew in about ¼ inch and then turn and sew back down and around the pocket. This will create a double stitch on the sides and bottom of the pocket and firmly hold it into place!
Tip: Before you sew the pocket into the liner of the pocket book or purse you can sew a fake matching stitch on the top. This will make it look more professional and match the idea and bottom stitches. Trim any loose ends and you are ready to sew into place inside the liner of the grocery bag or purse.
