The first thing you will need to do is to gather your sewing supplies. You will need:
Scissors
Ruler or measuring tape
Pins.
Pillow form (You can recover an old one, purchase a new one, or use stuffing. You could also make your own pillow by using an old sheet or pillowcase the desired size and stuff it.)
Measure your pillow form across and down. Add 2 inches to these measurements to get your pattern size. Use the pins to pin the front to the back of the T-Shirt to cut out both at the same time. Be careful not to stretch the fabric while you are cutting it out.
When you have your two pieces cut out, you will put right sides of fabric together and sew most of the way around, leaving enough space to insert your pillow form, or enough space for your hand to hand stuff it.
Use ½ inch seam allowance or 1 inch seam allowance for a very snug fit. Once you have done that you will turn the piece to the right side, insert the pillow form or stuffing. To finish off hand sew the opening closed. You will need to turn this seam down ½ inch and using your needle and thread, insert the needle into one side of fabric near the top of the fold. Slide your needle between the two layers and come out on the other side. If you continue in this manner, most of your stitches will be hidden between the two layers.
You may also sew it closed by machine or top stitch around the entire piece. The easiest way to do this is to top stitch the three finished edges before inserting the pillow form. After inserting the pillow form, you can now top stitch the remaining seam.
For a fun and easy variation of this pillow, you can take the T-Shirt of your choice and sew the neck opening and sleeve openings closed. Then you can stuff your pillow. These work great for sleeping if you place it beneath your legs if you sleep on your back, or between your legs if you sleep on your side. This helps to take some of the stress off of your lower back.
Another fun variation would be to add pictures to your pillow. You could add photos of your baby, your grandchildren or even your pets.
Another variation of this would be to add accessories. You could add lace, rope, cording, ruffles, buttons, beading or any other type of trims you prefer.
When you are finished, you will have made your very own unique T-Shirt pillow. Congratulations and enjoy!
