HOW to MAKE SHEPHERD'S PIE

Dee Davis
I have not made Shepherd's pie in ages! However, I decided to make it today and realized how truly wonderful and classic this dish is. It is a very easy meal to make, especially when you have run out of ideas. I always seem to be unsure about what to prepare for dinner, because I want the dishes to be new and interesting; not to mention delicious. I love to eat as much as I love to cook, therefore, I too like and look forward to enjoying a good meal every day (pretty much). Nonetheless, it is still a lot of pressure to produce a good meal EVERY DAY! Moreover, if you are the primary cook in your household, Shepherd's pie requires little effort, time and skill. Yeah for Shepherd's pie!!

Things You'll Need:

  • 7 medium sized potatoes

  • 1 stick (8 oz) butter

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 1 small onion chopped

  • frozen vegetables

  • 1/4 tsp thyme

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp seasoning salt

  • 1 pound ground beef (ground chicken or turkey are great options)

  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 cup honey barbecue sauce or your favorite flavor

  • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • pan

  • casserole dish

  • wooden spoon

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step1: Peel and put potatoes to boil on medium-high heat. Once they are boiled, pour the water off and set aside.

Step2: Heat frying pan on medium heat. Then add 2 tablespoons butter and let it melt. Once melted, add chopped onions and crushed garlic. Sauté onions and garlic for about 5 minutes then transfer to a small bowl.

Step3: Season ground meat with seasoned salt, worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and thyme. Then let it fry in pan until brown. During which time make sure that it's stirred constantly so that the meat does not become lumpy.

Step4: After the ground meat has been cooked, add 3/4 honey barbecue sauce and 1/2 cup water. Then add 1 cup frozen vegetables and let it simmer until the sauce becomes thick again, however, do not dry out.

Step5: Preheat oven at 375 degrees. Then add 2 tablespoons butter and 1 cup milk to potatoes and mash. Once potatoes have become smooth and creamy; set aside.

Step6: Layer the cooked ground meat at the bottom of the casserole dish or medium sized baking pan. Then add mashed potatoes on top of ground meat and spread mashed potatoes on top.

Step7: Place Shepherd's pie in oven uncovered, set timer to 20 minutes and let bake. Then remove from oven and sprinkle cheddar cheese on top. Let shepherd's pie bake for another 5 to 10 minutes and then remove from oven.

Step8: Allow Shepherd's pie cool for about 10 minutes, and then serve while still hot. Bonne appetite!
