How to Shoot Water Through Your Nose

Sinus Cleaning with a Homemade Saline Solution

Kelly Spies
Shooting water through your nose is not only hilarious and gross but it's also good for you. My husband had surgery two weeks ago that required his doctor to use a GPS like camera to poke around inside his skull. As a result of that surgery the doctor informed my husband that he will have to shoot water up into his nose twice a day for the rest of his life.

Now, I can not say I, myself have personally shot water through my nose - not on purpose anyway - but I can tell you that after watching my husband do this I have discovered what it takes to properly clean the snot out of your sinus cavity.

Here's what you do:

Supplies Needed:

2 cups warm water

1 teaspoon salt

1 nasaline nasal syringe

Instructions:

The first thing you're going to do is to prepare the place you plan to shoot water through your nose at. After watching my husband do this I would recommend that you lean over the bathtub. You don't have to scrub the tub but it should be fairly clean to avoid getting dirt in your salt water. Shooting dirt into your nasal passage isn't advisable.

Set your bowl of salt water inside the tub so that it is within reach. Drape a towel over your shoulders so you can wipe your face with it.

Pull the plunger on the nasaline syringe to draw as much salt water into it as you can. From what I've seen you'll have to repeat this step a minimum of three times.

Place the tip of the syringe inside your nose and push the plunger all the way in as fast as you can.

If the salt water doesn't go up into your sinuses but drains straight back down then you need to push the plunger faster.

When done correctly the salt water should shoot up into your sinuses to just about your eyeballs. Then it will change paths and come gushing out the other side of your nose.

Along with salt water coming out the other side of your nose should also be some snot and boogers.

Once you have successfully shot the full two cups of salt water up your nose, your sinuses should be cleaned.

Shooting water up your nose twice a day forever may help prevent chronic sinus problems, runny noses and sinus pollups.

The doctor also says it helps you breathe and smell better.

  • Avoid sinus infections by flushing sinuses 2 times a day.
  • Flushing your sinuses clears the passage way.
  • Water goes up one side of your nose and out the other side.
Sinusitis is when your sinuses don't drain and become infected.

There's a much easier way to do this. Get a water bottle with one of those sports tips. Fill the bottle with warm salt water. Tilt your head over the sink so one ear is facing down towards the drain. Place the sports tip into the upper nostril and squeeze the bottle. The water will come out the lower nostril, and the whole process takes about 15 seconds.
