Believe it or not, you can get a lot of information online. When shopping for a phone or a new carrier, it's important that you start your research online. Whatever phone you're looking to get, you will be surprised to find how many people are more than willing to give you a review on the item. You can tap into professional reviews like the ones done by pcmag.com or you can go for consumer reviews on websites like yelp.com or reviewstream.com. Whatever avenues you choose for your online research, it is very important that you use as many sources as you can. The more reviews you read, the better your decision making will be. You have to sift through all the glossy reviews and find the reviews that are right in the middle. People, who have negative things to say about a product, usually have good grounds for their qualms.
Go to each carrier's store
A lot of carriers like Verizon and T-mobile have their own stores. Now there is a big difference between a carrier's store and an outlet. Most outlets are nothing but vendors, and they sell items by almost every carrier company. You should go to actual stores that are owned or franchised by the carrier companies. Verizon stores don't sell T-mobile products and vice versa. By going to these stores, you can ask them questions, about the things that you found online. Sometimes the carriers will have different deals going on online compared to the ones in the stores. You should make your journey to the stores as effective as possible. The way to do that is to come prepared with questions and already have a few phones and plans in mind. This way you can already have an idea of what their answers will be, and you'll avoid whatever curve balls they throw at you.
Find three phones you like/sometimes they all have the same
The next thing you do is to find three phones that you like. You should already have different plans in mind by now. Most carriers will have the same types of phones. Samsung makes phones for T-mobile and Verizon. These companies don't have a monopoly over the phones so it will be easy to find three phones that you like and use them to make your decision.
Pit them against each other
With your phones in mind, you can pit all these companies against each other. Phone companies want your business, that's why they spend so much money on ads and commercials. They know that a good customer is hard to find so they are going to be willing to give you a better deal than the next guy. So go to each one of these companies and tell them what you want and let them know what other companies are offering you. If you've done your homework, they will know that you mean business and you won't flinch if they say no. you have to weed out the companies that are not willing to work with you, because it will make a big difference in the long run.
Get the minimum deal so you can bargain later and not have to incur cancellation fees.
Once you've decided on your carrier and your phone, it's important to try and get the minimum deal you can get. This way if they don't turn out to be the company you want to stick with, you can easily get out of your agreement with them. A lot of people get stuck with deals that they can't get out of and then incur these ridiculous cancellation fees. It's important to make sure that you can get out of your agreement without the fees. Fees will hit your wallet like a tsunami if you don't watch out.
