How to Shop for a Home Security System

Home security systems offer increased protection for your family and your home by serving both as a burglar deterrent and alarm system. Some home security systems also have fire and carbon monoxide alarms.

Typical security systems provide door and window sensors, security keypads, motion detectors, security cameras, audible horns, etc. If a break in is detected, the system will alert the authorities through a telephone line or PC. But with many companies offering home security systems, shopping for one can be daunting if you do not know what to look for. Every company will offer different home security features in their plans. You must compare apples to apples when you consider offers from multiple companies. Here is a guide to comparison shopping on home security systems.

• The first thing to look for is the kind of protection a security plan offers. Most importantly, find out what sections of your home will get protection. Does the plan provide enough sensors to cover your entire home? Or does it cover only your front and back doors? Are motion sensors included in the offer? Are the keypads easy to operate? How many security cameras are will be provided? Is there additional coverage for carbon monoxide and smoke detection?

• Most home security systems include a wired component and a wireless component. The wired parts will require drilling holes in your walls. Make sure your security system requires a minimum amount of drilling and it can be removed and reinstalled in case you move.

• Find out if the company provides comprehensive training to help you understand and operate your home security system.

• Look at the terms of warranty. If your system is defective, will they repair or replace it for free? Ask if there will there be extra costs for reinstallation.

• Check on the reputation of the companies offering services. Read online reviews or seek recommendation from friends who have tried the service. Ensure that their customer service is excellent. Find out if they offer 24-hour maintenance - in case you have a disruption in your security system, you do not want hours or days of down-time of your security system!

• Installation costs and monthly maintenance costs are important factors in your decision. Make sure you get the most for the lowest price.

The average home security system costs about $200-$300 for installation and $30-$50 a month for their monitoring services.

Keep in mind that no home security system is flawless. Even with a security system in place, you must take precautions for increased safety of your home. Lock your doors and windows, use bright lights at night and keep your jewelry and valuables in a safe place.
