When you're grocery shopping on a budget, it's easy to think that buying organic food is a luxury that you just can't afford. Organic food was once reserved for the farmer's market and co-op, and tasty food was only found at 'elite' food markets such as Whole Foods and gourmet supermarkets. However, it's easy to find low-cost and competitively priced options at your regular supermarket chains such as Trader Joe's. Here are some tips on how to shop for organic food on a budget.

Become a member of your local co-op. If you live in a farm community, this will be even easier for you. Food co-ops require allow you to enroll for an annual fee and then pick out your favorite organic foods from the season's selections. Some co-ops also trade dollars for services; consider arranging 8-10 hours per month to volunteer at your local co-op in exchange for discounts and reduced rates on all your top picks!

Focus on high-pesticide count foods first. The most common conventional fruits and veggies that contain harmful chemicals and pesticides include apples, potatoes, nectarines, and spinach. Plan on spending a little more than usual on these items, and cut back on others to balance your budget.

Look for independent grocery stores and supermarkets for more variety. You may avoid these places altogether since branded items are generally higher. However, organic and local produce can be considerably cheaper at these places, especially when it's in season. Take the time to visit at least 2-3 different local places in your area and review the selection.

Become a bulk buyer. This is especially useful when you're buying whole grains and lentils that can be stored easily for a few months. Bulk buying programs are also available at many coops and natural food stores, so don't be afraid to ask about discounts. This is a great way to incorporate healthy whole grains in your diet if you're not already eating them.

Start cooking at home. Eating at home can cut costs considerably, and you don't have to pay exorbitant prices at restaurants for organic fare. Pick up some cookbooks to spark your creativity in using new ingredients and fresh flavors, and easily cut costs on meals by freezing and storing larger portions.

Choose natural or generic over premium. This is easier to do at supermarkets such as Trader Joe's and even Whole Foods in some cases. Look for the store's brand over the premium for savings, and take advantage of manufacturer coupons whenever possible.

Shop online. Buying in bulk online is great way to track down your organic food favorites. Snack bars, soy milk, cereal, and whole grains can be purchased with ease and delivered to your door in a few days. Head to the Organic Consumers Association http://www.organicconsumers.org/purelink.html for a list of options both online and offline. Or, simply run a Google search for organic food online.

Eating organic food doesn't necessarily mean you need to overextend your budget. With today's growth in consumer demand for organic and natural foods, prices of many brands have dropped, along with increased competition and more choices for consumers. With big box stores including Wal Mart and Target now carrying many of today's leading organic brands, it's become even easier to adopt to--and stick with--an organic-based diet.
