1. Try not to compare them to other people like their siblings or friends. No one likes to be compared and by doing so, it makes them think that they are not good enough. Make sure they know that you love them for who they are no matter what.
2. Learn forgiveness. Be prepared for kids to just be kids and cause trouble, break things, and get into fights. After they do something they are not supposed to and you send them to their room, be sure to also give them a hug and tell them that you love them.
3. Tell them you are proud of them. Some parents think that it is unnecessary to say that you are proud of them if they got an A on something because it should be obvious that you are. This is simply not the case. Children want to hear it because it makes them feel good about themselves, and it shows that you are actually paying attention to their hard work. If you have another child that is not getting as good of grades as their sibling, tell them that you know they can do better and to try a little harder, and that you will be proud no matter what.
4. If you are wrong, then tell them that you are sorry. Doing so teaches them proper manners and it will not be as hard for them to say sorry when as they get older and make mistakes too.
5. Show genuine interest in their life. Do not just ask them how their day was at school. Ask more questions like if they made any new friends and what their names are. Ask them why they do or do not like their teachers and classes. Also be sure to ask about their homework and how they are doing in their classes.
6. Instead of telling them to get their sibling or friend to play with them, you should play with them whenever you can too. Whether it be their favorite board game or throwing baseballs around, you should join in.
