Make those phone calls. Have a regular schedule of phone calls that you make daily, or several times a week. Talk about your life, as much as they talk about theirs, so they know you want them to be apart of it. Send emails of anything you find that interests your child or reminds you of them. Call on every special day, make notes of these days in a calendar just for you and your child, so you never forget them.
Keep your promises, and ensure that you don't forget. Children remember forgetfulness more than they remember what you forgot, so always remember promises and events. Send presents for birthdays, holidays and a care package for each activity they join. The start of school is sometimes a big deal for kids, make sure they have a package from you with special items in it that make them smile.
Show your child that you are concerned with their life. Communicate with the other parent and relatives involved in raising your child. Make sure you are kept in the loop with all progress, and set-backs. Talk to your child's school and make sure that you are doing as much as you can to help with the education they get, as teachers to make suggestions. Know who their friends are, so they can talk to you about them (If you forget names, keep a list in your calendar).
Following these steps will allow your child to see that you love them, which is sometimes hard for a child when they don't live with you. Just saying, "I love you," isn't enough to be a good parent, you should always consider your child and be involved in their day to day life. Keep in mind that a child has an easier time with being separated from a parent if they always express happiness, and stay positive when communicating. Children will obsess about their parents being happy if they know they are miserable, so always keep a smile in your voice so there is no reason to be concerned with your well-being.
