Search for a DSL Service Provider
Contact telephone companies in your area to inquire about DSL service. A few of the popular DSL companies include AT&T, Earthlink, Verizon and Quest. You can also search for DSL providers online by visiting websites such as High-Speed-Internet-Access-Guide.com, and HighSpeed-Internet-Providers.com.
Choose a Package that Suits Your Needs
When comparing DSL packages, pay close attention to important items like the monthly price, deposit, term commitment, speed (upstream and downstream), features (e.g. free antivirus software and email addresses), special discounts and the type of equipment you need to purchase (e.g. modem, wireless router).
Apply for DSL Service
You may be able to apply for service online (on the provider's website), over the telephone with a sales representative, or in person at an appropriate place of business. Be prepared to supply the DSL service provider with your personal information, such as your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, driver's license number and contact details.
Find Out if You Were Approved for Service
It should only take a few minutes for the sales representative to process your application. More than likely the sales representative will perform a credit check to determine if you need to pay a deposit. Once your application is processed, the sales rep will tell you the amount you need to pay up front (if applicable), including a deposit, sales tax, installation and connection fees and the price for the equipment.
Complete the Installation Process
In most instances, you can either request for a service technician to come to your home and install the DSL Internet service for you; or you can install the software on your computer yourself. If you choose to install the software on your own, the service provider will send you the DSL installation kit, equipment and instructions on how to set up your service. Please note you will be charged a fee if you request a service technician to come to your home.
Confirm That Your Service is Working
Once the DSL Internet service is installed on your computer, make sure that your service is working properly. You can access the Internet through the Web browser of your choice (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari). Contact the DSL service provider immediately if you are unable to access the Internet.
