How to Sign Up for Unemployment Benefits

As more jobs disappear each month, formerly employed individuals find themselves looking for work. To help with the financial hardship that exists between losing a job and finding anther one, many countries offer some type of temporary support, usually referred to as unemployment compensation. However, the process is not automatic in most cases; you have to apply for the benefits before they will be granted. Here are three ideas of how to make the application and claim compensation while you look for work.

While many people do not know it, your former employer can help get the ball rolling for you. The Human Resources department can assist you in filling out the necessary paperwork, include documents they will ultimately have to submit, and send the entire package in for you. In jurisdictions where this is an authorized method of filing for unemployment compensation, there is a good chance your benefits will kick in a week or two faster than if you tried to do the job yourself.

A second approach is to go online. In the United States, many state jurisdictions now allow citizens to file for unemployment benefits by accessing a secure site on the state's network and entering all the relevant data. A response may come by way of phone, email, or postal letter, depending on how the online application process is configured. This method also has potential to get your benefits approved and initiated a little quicker than standing in for the better part of a day and then finding out you need information that you did not bring along.

If you have nothing better to do, there is always the option of heading down to the unemployment office, taking a number, and waiting for your turn to speak with one of the case workers there. Keep in mind that the amount of time you have to devote to this enterprise depends on two key factors - the number of people ahead of you and how quickly the case workers can assist those people in preparing their claims. Use this method only if you do not have easy access to the Internet or your jurisdiction does not currently any other alternative. After all, time spent cooling your heels at the unemployment office is also time you could be out looking for work.

With a little luck, you won't have to rely on unemployment compensation for long. But in the meantime, take the time to apply for and claim your benefits. After all, you've paid for them in years past. Why not use them while you look for work?
