How to Sing

Kay Pierre
Singing is my passion. I've been singing ever since I was nine years old. Music has been my number one passion and comfort in life. When I was younger, I always tried to sing but I was very clueless to what it's about. I took some singing lessons but I was still struggling in singing. I recently took some more singing lessons and now I'm a very solid singer. I'll show you the basics of singing and you can progress from it.

I'll start out with suggesting you to take a professional singing course because you will learn so much from a live professor. It would be good also because you will get their feedbacks and they can tell you what you need to change. Live lessons are necessary if you want to be good at singing. You will also gain more confidence if you really know what you need to do. You will be more insecure if you don't have a coach. That's how I felt, I'm more confidence when I know that a coach has taught me exactly what to do and I know that I'm doing it well.

If you can't take a course in the mean time I suggest you buy a video tape on singing and learn from it. It is very helpful but it lacks the feedback from a real classroom. You can also view many lessons on Youtube.com. Another great way to learn is listening to all types of artist and tries to observe their technique. This can help but you must maintain your own uniqueness.

Another thing that really helps you to learn the notes is by playing an instrument yourself or listening to someone else playing it. If you listen to the piano very carefully you will noticed the melody of notes on high tone and low tone. You can then figure out what notes your tone is at. For example, most men have a very low tone therefore their voice would be like on the E notes. Most women have a tone from medium to high but rarely deep like a man, therefore, we'll be anywhere from the G to A.

Singing is like a wave, some notes are low and some are high and some are neutral and that's how you must sing. I've heard people sing a song like a straight line with no high or low notes and that is wrong.

Before you began singing you must do some warm up just like a runner doing his or her warm up. A runner doesn't sprint right away when he gets to the track, he must stretches, jog for awhile and drink and then he'll run. This is the best way. Before you run, you must warm up by practicing on a scale or clear your throat or hum a song. Your warm ups will help clear your voice and strengthen your voice. Before you learn how to sing at all, you must start practicing the basic vocal skills like getting all your notes right, clearing your voice, positioning of your tongue and so far.

Similar to working out, the more you exercise your voice, the better it will get. Your throat muscle will be stronger and it will produce a clearer and stronger voice. Warming ups you can try are humming a song and getting all the notes right. You can hum it for a couple of days just to get the notes and to get your voice clear. Warming up will also help you increase your breath holding capacity. In order to sing a whole song you must have great breathing volume. The next warm up to try is positioning your tongue. This is very important because if you close up your voice box with the base of your tongue, it won't work. Just like turning on a water faucet, you must have a clear tunnel right, if you have a clog, you won't be getting much water. When singing you must have the base of your tongue out of the way. Try saying the word Gala and you can see how to get your tongue out of the way.

The next technique is opening your mouth. Your mouth has to be open wide and hollow or else you can't get a good loud voice out. If you sing closing your mouth narrowly, you will see that a very silent voice come out. Try saying the word "oh", say this word and then open your mouth largely according with it. Do it like you're eating you're favorite food and you must open really wide to eat it all or else your brother will steal all of it. The wider you open your mouth the better you'll sound

The next technique is singing "la,la,la" on all the notes. I'm sure you have heard of people practicing this, they would sing "la, la, la, la, la, la, la on all the notes from high to low. You should do this before you sing any song just to clear your voice and get the notes in place.

The next technique is breathing lesson. You must work on your breathing with each song or else you'll break up in the middle of the song and its not what you want. You must inhale enough air before you sing so that your notes will last. This is just like working out, you'll be better as times go by.

Singing is smooth like a melody. You can't jump into a word, you must get into it smoothly, and all of your words should interconnect smoothly not roughly. Do not abruptly jump into a word , this is not the way, You should learn how much elongation a word need, some requires 4 tap , some 2 tap and some 8 tap.

Singing a song is like acting a scene it must have the emotions that a song required. If a song is a sad song, you must show sad emotion, if happy, you must show happiness. You must do this correctly or else your song will sound very boring. Singing is to influence the audience, you must make the audience feels your songs and make them cry or laugh.

After learning all the little technique, you can put them all together and start working on a simple song like Jingle Bell. This is a very easy song, anyone can get the notes right. Work on songs every single day to give your voice box some muscle and you lungs to expand. If you do this for about 6 months, you'll be a very advance singer.
