How to Sing with Confidence

Thomas Griffin
Oh, that we all would sing with confidence!

For some people, this is such an arduous thing to do. I don't want to lie to you and say that there is one magic solution to fixing this issue. In my own personal journey with learning how to sing better, I can honestly say that this is a recurring struggle. Singing with confidence is not like getting a solid vocal foundation or achieving a specific goal. Singing with confidence is like running 2 miles a day just to keep the weight off - understand what I mean?

In effect, learning how to sing with confidence is a daily choice that must be made. However, making this choice can be quite difficult based on the circumstances that we are faced with day to day. Some days we feel as if we can sing anything we want to, and on those days, singing with confidence is a breeze. On other days, though, we feel as though we can't hit a lick and have to consciously think about every note we attempt to hit. *hears the roar of 'amens'*

So here are the tips that I want to give you in order that you may learn how to sing with confidence on a regular basis. First and foremost, develop yourself a solid foundation for singing. It is hard to sing with confidence if you are constantly crawling in the dark, attempting to 'figure your voice out'. Buy yourself a program (I highly recommend Brett Manning's Singing Success) or some voice lessons and take the time to practice. I cannot stress this enough (I think I harp on this in every article that I write) - build a foundation for your voice. Learn the proper vocal techniques like vocal cord closure and breath control. Once you have built yourself a strong foundation, the 'house' (aka your voice) will not be easily shaken. You will find that it is much easier to sing with confidence and freedom when you know that you have a solid foundation to stand upon.

Secondly, remember that singing with confidence is mostly a mental issue. Building a solid vocal foundation bolsters your mental reassurance, but it won't do enough on days when you *think* you cannot sing well. Prepare yourself mentally - think on the times when you reached a goal in your singing journey (maybe the time you hit a certain note or sang a certain song well). Think back to how it felt then and bring those feelings to life now. You'd be surprised at how much positive thinking can do for your singing (not the least of these reducing your tension from nerves).

Be willing to take risks when singing. Even failure can open up avenues for singing with confidence! Push yourself mentally and see what you can achieve!
