Skylight Efficiency
Install your skylight in the best light efficient spot in your house. The ideal location for a skylight is on the east or north side of the roof. Skylights mounted on the west or south tend to let too much light in. Check your homes design and plan where your skylight will have the most efficient light source.
Buy the Right Skylight
Buy a skylight with a "U-factor" of .50. The "U-factor" is an ultra violet rating. It is suggested that the skylight be marked as an Energy Star skylight. This skylight will be the most energy efficient. Another option is to install eco-mod skylights. Eco-mod skylights are technologically advanced skylights, that take advantage of solar energy. They are expensive, but the manufacturers claim they are 60 percent more effective than standard skylights. By taking advantage of solar energy, you are ensuring the most efficient skylight possible
Purchase a Skylight Shade
Purchase and install a skylight shade. These are often called cellular shades and prevent energy loss through the skylight. The cellular shades come in different colors to match your home decorating theme, while still allowing light to show through the shade. By installing a skylight shade, your skylight will be more energy efficient.
By knowing how to properly install a skylight and which type to purchase, the addition to your home will be a lasting treasure. Enjoy the light!
