How to Make a Small Bedroom Romantic

Amy Brantley
You may think that a small bedroom limits your ability to create romance, but you'd be wrong. A small bedroom can be even more romantic than a large master suite. While it may take careful planning, there are several things you can do to make your small boudoir into a romantic escape. Best of all, you won't have to spend a lot of money.

Clear the Clutter

The first thing you must do to create a romantic bedroom is to clear the clutter. There is nothing romantic about stacks of clothing, piles of books, boxes of tissues and other unsightly items. For the most part, surfaces should be clear of clutter. You want to look around the room and feel refreshed, rather than drug down. This may mean going through your items and donating quite a bit, but if you create proper storage areas, you will be able to keep much of your necessary items. Look for pieces of furniture that fit the space, but offer storage, such as night stands that have drawers for tissues, medicine, earplugs and all those other necessary items.

Choose a Bold Color

People think that if they paint a small room a dark shade it will automatically make the room feel smaller. The paint color has nothing to do with the size of the room. Usually the problem lies in the size of the furniture. If your furniture fits the room, color is not going to be an issue. This means you can go for a dark shade of red, the same color as a rose, without feeling claustrophobic. Don't be afraid to grab a color that is dark and risque. You'd be surprised at how much romance can be added with a simple can of paint.

Spend Money on High Quality Bedding

Yes, luxurious bedding can be expensive, but there's something truly romantic about the feel of soft fabric against your skin. Silk, satin or even Egyptian cotton are all wonderful choices for sheets. You should also spend money to get the best thread count possible. When it comes to covers, microfiber offers a soft, luxurious feel, but satin comforters are also just as luxurious. Visit a high end department store and spend time feeling of the different fabrics until you find something you like.

Opt for a Fireplace

You may be wondering how you'll fit a fireplace in your already overcrowded bedroom. Thankfully, there's a perfect solution. Wall mounted fireplaces are not only as thin as many LCD TVs, but have come down in price substantially. For less than $500, you can add a fireplace to your bedroom without taking up more space than a piece of artwork. Best of all, electric fireplaces allow you to add romance without adding heat.

Use Candles and Fragrances

A thousand years from now, you can bet that candlelight will still be romantic. While candles do make a bedroom romantic, it's best to keep the grouping small. Try adding a set of three candles in various heights to surfaces throughout the room. You can opt for scented candles, but remember to keep all the scents the same. If you want a pleasing fragrance without using scented candles, a container of potpourri does a nice job. Just be sure to use a decorative container than matches the colors of the room.
