How to Make Small Bedroom Windows Look Larger

Danielle Friedl
So you've got yourself some tiny bedroom windows. When you realize that all interior decorating does is trick your eye to believe what it wants you'll be set! Let's assume that ripping out your wall and replacing the window with a bigger one is out of the question. Don't worry - it's definitely not the easiest method and it's by far the messiest. Plus you might get in trouble with your landlord if you're renting. Looks like tricking the eye is back on the table.

The absolute easiest thing to do is curtain choice and placement. If all you have is a valance on your window begin by placing the hardware above the window frame and extend it beyond the sides of the frame. If you're just looking for height just raise the valance bar higher than the window frame. If you're just looker to make the window wider simply extend it beyond the sides of the frame. If you want both height and width - do both! Using curtain panels instead of, or in addition to, the valance works even better. Your panels will cover the sides of the window frame and the valance will cover the top.

Let's talk color. Color is one of the most important aspects in tricking the eye and very handy in interior decorating. The easiest, least expensive and most favored by renters is window blinds. You're going to need some sort of shading on the window to block out intrusive eyes and the sun in the morning. White horizontal window blinds will give the window a wider and larger appearance. White vertical window blinds will elongate the window. Darker colors will close the window up so from blinds to curtains, always go lighter. Avoid using window shades, as they often make the window disappear altogether, rather than make it bigger.

If you have the option, money and fortitude to do some painting then go for it. It's a bedroom so you don't want loud or obnoxious colors in there. The beauty of this trick is that as long as you pick a color that has the least bit of depth to it, like blues, lavenders, peaches and pinks, you can incorporate your curtain placement trick with your light-colored curtains and blinds trick and you'll have the absolute biggest windows possible for a room with such tiny windows. Avoid dark hues of these colors and stay away from yellow - it's too bright and cheerful and not conducive to sleep.

Whichever method you decide on remember to use your own judgment in placement and color. This is still a place you want to be able to relax and sleep in. Busy curtain patterns and truly dark colors anywhere in the room will make the entire place look small and be too empowering so avoid them when possible. Use whatever tricks fit your style and your budget and sleep tight!
