How to Make a Small Kitchen Appear Larger

Skyler Raine
English screenwriter Laurence "Laurie" Lee famously quoted, "But our waking lives, and our growing years, were for the most part spent in the kitchen, and until we married, or ran away, it was the common room we shared." Women and some men do love to keep their kitchen looking roomy even though in reality they only have a small kitchen. Some people seek the best designs to make their kitchen lovely, appealing and spacious to house guests. Well, it's not a problem if you have a small and overcrowded food preparation area. There are easy ways to create the illusion of a large kitchen out of a small space.

The initial step is to think of the function you desire for your kitchen. Is your kitchen designed only for cooking or do you want the room to be shared with your house pet and laundry equipment. For easy movement and a large working space, the most suggested kitchen function would probably be for cooking only.

The next thing to work on is to look for unused places such as underneath the sink. Try to search for more cabinet space to store kitchen utensils and accessories that are not often used. To avoid a cluttered appearance, purchase dish holders, dish racks or bowl racks and install it inside of the cabinet. There are various designs available in the hardware and online marketplace. There are multi-layer, single layer, wall mounted, round, wirework, quadrangle and collapsible styles and different materials such as wood, alloy, plastic, chrome, stainless steel, iron ware and even bamboo. Analyze the available storage space and check whether it has the availability to setup an additional cabinet on top of the other. Another alternative is to buy a Lazy Susan which comes in half moon, pie cut, full circle, D shaped and Kidney shapes. This kitchen organizer was invented during the year 1917 and seen in a Vanity Fair classified advertisement. If Lazy Susan is not your type, you may personally install an easy to use pull-out shelves or sliding shelves.

A creative method of making one's kitchen look bigger is to change the wall paint to a brighter shade. The kitchen requires installation of more windows to provide natural lighting. White may appear plain yet house decorators prefer this color to create the vision of a larger space. Select bright colors for kitchen equipments such as tables and barstools to accentuate the white wall painting and to exude a contemporary look.

Insert kitchen hooks to hang coffee mugs or measuring cups. Hooks save kitchen space by holding pots, frying pans and dish rags. It also serves as decorative and lovely accessory to your kitchen.

Last, open cabinets or cabinets with clear doors will add a more airy and open appearance to a kitchen - just remember to keep your dishes organized so that it doesn't add a cluttered look.
