How to Make a Snowmen Fence for a Window

Agnes Farside
Several years ago, I worked as an activity director in a nursing facility for the elderly. I was in charge of all resident activities, including social events and crafts. One winter craft the residents enjoyed making was a snowmen fence that they could display in their windows, or give as gifts. One reason this craft was so popular was its longevity as the residents could display it all through the long winter months. Although a snowmen fence is easy to make and requires few materials, it does take a few days to complete. This craft is also an excellent way to reuse those knit gloves that have lost their mate.

Items Needed to Make a Snowmen Fence

-Six inch long, wide wooden craft sticks (number needed will depend on width of window) (sticks should be one and one-half inches wide)

-Two wooden yard sticks, cut to the width of the window you plan to decorate (or you can use paint stir sticks-depends on how wide you want to make the fence)
-Variety of Acrylic paints (extra containers of white)
-Paintbrushes
-Fine-tipped markers (optional)
-Old knit gloves (variety of colors)
-Mod Podge
-Scissors
-Glue gun and glue sticks or craft glue
-Glitter (optional)

Instructions for Making a Snowmen Fence

No. 1 Paint the yardsticks and wooden craft sticks with several coats of white Acrylic paint. Let each piece dry thoroughly before applying another coat.

No. 2 Paint on the snowmen faces using either the Acrylic paints or the fine-tipped markers. Be sure to paint on two or three buttons bellow the face area.

No. 3 In order to form a snowman hat, cut off the tip of one of the fingers of an old knit glove. Be sure to cut off enough to make a one-fourth seam allowance. Place tip on snowmen top and fold under one-fourth inch and glue in place. Use the lower part of the finger for the snowman scarf. Cut to desirable length and glue in place. Cut as many hats and scarves as you have snowmen. If you do not have any old knit gloves, you can use scrap pieces of felt, or a mixture of both.

No. 4 Unravel some of what is left of the knit gloves to make tassels for the hats and on the ends of the scarves and glue in place. This is an optional procedure. You can also buy miniature pom-poms to put on top the hats.

No. 5 Arrange the snowmen on the yardsticks before gluing in place. Arrangement depends on what you want. You may want them staggered or all the same height. The bottom yardstick is approximately three inches from the bottom of the snowmen and the top yardstick was about the same distance from the top.

No. 6 After the snowmen have been glued in place and the glue has dried; apply a coat of Mod Podge. Let this dry completely and then apply another coat. Before the final coat has dried, sprinkle with a little glitter.

Your snowmen fence is now ready to display in your window. You can also hang this for display in your home.
