How a Song Can Change Your Perspective: Let it Be

Music Really is a Gift

Sherri Thornhill

I was driving home from work last week, stressed out, annoyed, pre-occupied with thoughts of things much more important than my job. I have friends fighting cancer, a relative dealing with alcoholism, and I'm worried about all of them.

We all have things going on in our lives. No matter how "fine" we may seem on the outside, human beings have problems. We get good at hiding things from others; someone asks you,"How you doing?" and you reply, "Great." You know you are far from feeling great, but most people are only asking how you are doing just to be polite, or somehow acknowledge you.

So with all of the above weighing on my mind and dragging my mood down into the pits, I started changing my radio station because I did not want to hear another commercial about "laser hair removal". I happened upon a light FM station, which is totally opposite of what I usually listen to. I am so happy I was channel surfing that day. The old Beatles song, "Let It Be" was playing. I'm not a big Beatles fan, they were before my time, but I love that song and I had not heard it in a long while.

It turns out that "Let It Be" was released just 3 weeks before I was born in 1970, so maybe my mom played it for me when I was a baby. Whatever the case, listening to "Let It Be" soothed my weary mind. The lyrics and the soft sound of that song literally brought my blood pressure down. It seems to allow me to put things in perspective and remind myself that there are just some things that this Aries has no control over. Sometimes I have to just let it be.

If you are in need of reminding yourself to let it be, you can see a video of The Beatles performing the song by clicking here. I've put the lyrics below for you. If even one of you can use this song to feel a little less stressed today, then this was completely worth writing this article.

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, .....

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, .....
