How Soon THEY Forget!

Thoughts of an Average American Woman

L. J. Diring
How soon they forget. While watching the news on BBC America, an author was being interviewed about the global financial crisis in which the world is involved. This author made several statements which induced thoughts of, "How soon they seem to forget!" This author made the statement that the US needs to make sure that it 'deal' with all of the debt it is in to other countries and "not ignore it." How stupid do they think the US is?? Isn't that exactly what all of Europe, Japan and all of the countries that our generous country has lent monies to has done?? In addition, the United Nations owes the US about 4 billion dollars, yet is threatening the US over about 211million dollars owed by the US by December, with being 'kicked out,' how does this add up? What have They done to repay OUR generosity?? IGNORED it. So, why is it that the US should worry about ITS debts, while these countries continue to IGNORE theirs? If they repaid the United States of America and all of it's generosity, with the interest owed, this may actually pay off some of the debts that the United States owes. In addition, the author's statements also gave thoughts of "what business it is of England's or any other country for that matter?" England has an attitude toward the United States of 'cum-up-ins,' because of the revolutionary war.

This seems very hypocritical indeed!! A bit of the hippo calling the elephant fat!! Why doesn't all of Europe, (excluding Britain) Japan, the USSR (the former Soviet Union) Korea, Viet Nam and every country in debt to the US get off of their bottoms and repay the United States of America the monies owed it, this includes any interest owed, by the way! Seven to ten decades worth of interest (since WWI) could do quite a bit to repay debt owed by the US, one would think. Mexico has not been even paying it's interest payments for the monies owed the US, let alone any principal payments, over the last several years. Repayment of these debts owed should help the United States out of it's current financial turmoil. For these countries to 'forget' the monies owed to the United States is appalling! To add insult to injury, by accusing the US of exactly the same debt avoidance techniques these countries in debt to the US have used, is even more ridiculous! Pay up all countries who owe money to the United States and her VERY generous people. The countries borrowed it, now, they should pay these debts. Only IF all of these countries are without debt to the US, should these countries have made statements about what the United States does about it's debt! Since these countries are obviously experts in the subject of being in debt, they should have no problem paying debts to the United States.

Oh yes, how would it be if the United States government and it's citizens decide to STOP sending financial aid to all South American and all other countries it has aided over the last many years? Since these countries do not like the United States, maybe, the US should stop making these foreign aid payments!! Cutting all foreign aid to anti-US countries should cut the United State's debt rather quickly. If all of the aid sent by the US to countries, who do not like it, is stopped, and the government diverts that money to the debt the United States owes to other countries, the debt will be paid off quickly. The United States has found out, a bit the 'hard way,' that it has many fair weather friends in the world. Only when the United States stops aiding every country who needs help, will the rest of the world realize that it has been very ungrateful, indeed.

When the Tsunami Struck in 2004, the US helped in many ways, only one of which was financial. When aid was discontinued and the figures were in, many across the globe accused the United States of 'being stingy,' this could not be more untrue. The billions of dollars that America and her citizens donated, by government and taxes, AND privately wasn't even enough to avoid ridicule. Consequently, the United States does NOT owe these countries anything! The United States is not REQUIRED to send aid to any countries it helps with foreign aid and with disaster aid, as well. Often, US citizens and businesses donate private aid to these charities, as well. This money is tax deductible. This is added to any disaster aid or foreign aid, so the US government is giving in this way, as well, as the government disaster or foreign aid sent to other countries of the world.

Another interesting issue which really makes many Americans angry is the fact that when the US has had natural and other disasters, such as Katrina, the US did not accept many of the offers of help. When the US did decide to take a certain country up on an offer of help, this offer was 'changed' and the much reduced funds were instead funneled through the American Red Cross and the other part of the aid offered was never sent at all. Even when help was offered and accepted, many of the offers were instead revoked or much reduced. Very few countries actually sent any aid offered to the US, guess they figured that the US and her citizens did not need the help?? As anyone can see, the US did need aid. Much of the Katrina area is still in disrepair, and uninhabitable due to a lack of funding, among other issues. Many residents of New Orleans are still homeless, or are in other areas, due to the area being still largely uninhabitable. There was a British television show on BBC America recently, the 3 people on the show purchased very cheap automobiles and raced them across the US. They then attempted to donate what was left of the vehicles to the poor in New Orleans. These 3 members of the cast were shocked over the amount of devastation in New Orleans, several years after the Hurricane. Sadly, some of the continuing devastation is because of mismanagement of the disaster by city officials, but anyone can still donate to help this area recover from the disaster. Has any country offered to help fund the rebuilding of these faulty levies or offered to teach the US to repair or replace these levies? All of which have contributed to the continued devastation in Louisiana. Of course not! Katrina, 9/11 and numerous tornadoes have contributed to the debt the United States owes, in addition to other issues. If other countries would have helped when the US needed it, as the US does for other countries in need, America may not be in the great amount of debt it is now in. The United States does not have an infinite supply of money from which to draw. From now on, when disaster strikes, the United States should turn it's back on the countries in need of help, as has been done to the United States when it has been in need. When no aid is given, the US and her people will be accused of being ungenerous. People of other countries of the world, WAKE UP, before biting the hand that helps. The United States should no longer give money to help people of the world and worry about itself! Not at any time in which aid had been given from the US, has it EVER been returned. Never has a country said "Oh thanks, but the US needs this money more than we do."

How many debts has the United States 'forgiven?' Many European countries had paid part of the debt owed the US, and simply stopped making payments. Great Brittan is the ONLY country who paid it's debts to the United States in full, with interest. Britain should be commended for the repayment and honoring it's debts. This debt was paid in total last year (2007). The US has forgiven the debts of many countries. In February, 2006, the United States had forgiven all of Afghanistan's debts owed the US, in an amount of over 108 million dollars. Do they think the US does not need it? Most of West Germany's debts were NOT forgiven, but just simply forgotten. And the others, France, Italy, Spain, etc, they just quit making payments, but have we collected on any of this? No, because we are the generous US. Well, maybe it is time to quit being so benevolent.

The United States should call in it's debts and discontinue aid to all countries which it now helps. Why is it that when the United States does anything to help, no matter what the reason, it is criticized? No matter what our benevolent country does, it is not enough or was not done 'correctly?' This criticism of our generosity is making the generous Americans angry, to the point of NOT helping in the future. If a country cannot help itself and pay it's own bills, then it certainly has no business assisting others who need help. If the US would take this attitude toward the world, maybe someone would help the United States? Not likely! Other countries should keep anti-American attitudes to themselves, or risk being completely cut off by the United States, government and privately. Many Americans who remember the World Wars and all of the aid the United States has given to every country in need with financial and other rescue aid with every disaster, are just plain tired of hearing about how terrible and bad the United States and her people are, and are going to DO something about it!
